review of 10 e-book readers

And Sally likes her Kindle Next Gen.... wish I hadn't showed her how to order books on the credit card though... :roll: I use the Droid-X to read them.

Charlie, if my memory serves me right, not too many weeks ago, I offered to take your credit card for some reason that I don't even remember. I truly would have taken much better care of your credit card and not used it on "books", but would have used it on something that you and I REALLY enjoy......"boating jewelry"! :lol:

(Perhaps, you wish to reconsider....I'll pm my address to you so you can mail Sally's credit card to me.... :mrgreen: )
 
My kids gave me an I-POD nano for my birthday.Holy mackeral, how do they fit all that stuff in that little box? I use it when I work out. Forget about the music and the FM, I've now moved on to downloading books from the library. Presently reading/listening to "The Bourne Identity". Who knows, now that I'm in shape maybe I'll get a job with the Agency. Do they take 75 year old guys?

Hi Marty,

If you want to get something besides eBooks or audiobooks, try downloading podcasts from iTunes. Most are free; a couple of my favorites: World of Boating and Furled Sails. Furled Sails hasn't uploaded anything in a while, but there is a real wealth of interviews with boat designers, world cruises, etc, etc. More sail oriented, but I've found them to be quite interesting. World of Boating is a weekly 2 hour radio show, based in Florida... some info, but mostly good for a few yucks. And did I mention: free? :wink:

There are podcasts on nearly any subject. People are making their own "radio shows" and you can listen to them at your convenience.

Perhaps a bit Off Topic from the eReaders, but since you mentioned you are a new Nano owner, I thought you might enjoy this other option. Oh, and for those who use iPods, iPod Touch, iPhone (or other smart phones), or iPad as a reader, you can listen to the gazillions of free podcasts... another thing in favor of those items over the standard eReaders.

As an E-reader only the Kindle beats the iPad hands down, in my opinion. The Kindle is smaller, easier to handle for reading, draws less attention, and the screen is infinitely better in direct sunlight. The battery lasts for weeks instead of hours and the price is much lower.

I had an iPad for a few weeks and ended up giving it to a family member. Between a netbook, MacBook Pro, iPhone, and Kindle, I just didn't see much use in the iPad. It's great at consuming content, but if the primary goal is consuming books, then the Kindle is wayyy better.

That's my opinion anyway...
 
I got the Kindle app for the Macbook, not really a portable reader to take on the plane (Macbook battery is not good enough), but it is still pretty cool. I have purchased one book, but was really surprised to learn that there are hundreds of thousands of free (pre-1923, out of copyright) titles available not only from Amazon but also other libraries on the net. Now I just need some time to puruse them and read a few!

I have also been introduced to an iPod and it holds lots of music, but the thing I like the best is Old Time Radio Shows.
They can be downloaded in MP3's and put on an iPod.
Gunsmoke, Fibber Mcgee and Mollie,Boston Blackie, just to name a few.
