Replacing the icebox on a 22'

I've decided to replace the useless ice box on the Retriever.
I was pleasantly surprised to find I could slide it out after
unscrewing just four screws. I have a friend with a shop who
will build a cabinet for me. I'm going to drop off the ice box
so he can use it as a template to make something which will just slide back in.

Now comes the question as what to use for wood.
Last time I checked Degraguard was not readily available in
New England so I thought I'd use white Marine Starboard, at least
for the door. Should I make the entire cabinet out of this or
maybe use a marine plywood for the parts that don't show? :?

I see some brats have installed drawers and others went with a cabinet. I'm
leaning toward the cabinet as drawers are more work.
But if there's a real advantage I want to do it right.

I built mine out of teak.... what I did was to buy 4 of those teak cabinet doors like West Marine sells...they come already with frames...I took the frames all apart...and use them for the facia of the cabinet....I used three of the doors for drawer fronts...and the one for the top I had to cut down as I didn't want a 4" drawer on top... it worked really well...and was much cheeper than buying teak drawer fronts... you can find deals on the fronts on EBAY and discount mail order supply places... I think I paid $28 each for mine..

There are pictures in my SEA3PO album.

Phil,
If your friend just makes a cabinet with a back the same size as the fridge you will lose a lot of useable space. You probably have already done this-but the top shelves can be much deeper due to the shape of the hull.

I also found a place on the web that makes custom cabinet drawers ...any width or depth....fancy edges ...exotic woods if you wish.. really cool... I had them make my drawers out of red oak...and seal them (dip) for marine use.... I made each drawer as deep as the hull shape would allow... really got allot of space out of that worthless ice box area.
They turned out super and were not very expensive...
