repairing minor scratches on boat

3M Finesse-It II is probably the best fine rubbing compound. Assuming that your scratches do not require gel coat repair or sanding with high number grits...

if you need a really fine grit, finer than 600 in an automotive paper you can get stuff made for sharpening surgical tools that is measured in Microns

On the suggestion of a good friend I tried Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover you can get at any auto parts. Really worked great. I highly recommend it.

H

If they are not through the gel-coat Scott @ the factory advised me 600 or even 800 grit on a DA, followed by 3M Imperial Compound on a buffer w/a lambs-wool pad.

People that are telling you to use sand paper--you need to use wet and dry--wet. If you start with 600, then you need to work up: 800, 1000, 1200 and then Finess-it and a good wax. Do not use a power sander or dry paper.
