Removable cockpit floor?

Hello to all,
Today, while looking at boats, i ran across an '04 Cruiser 22 with benches as opposed to a galley and dinette.
It looks like the floor of the cockpit is slightly raised and in 2 sections with a split fore to aft, and looks like it lifts out.

Anyone have any knowledge of this setup? I don't recall ever seeing one quite like this.

Yes, some 22 boats have this feature. Earlier boats had a cockpit floor that follows the contours of the hull. This make for an uneven surface. Around the mid 2000's C-Dory made panels that fit into the cockpit that made the floor flat. These are removable. I considered purchasing a 2006 boat that had these panels.

Around 2008, the factory made flat cockpit floors a permanent feature that is built into the boat and is fixed.

It is possible that some owners made their own system of panels to level the cockpit floor.

I like the bench configuration, but i can see where many folks would like more of a "camper" set up. We do nearly all day cruises, ofter with a couple passengers.
 
So with the removable floor, does this just create a place for stuff to accumulate and create another boat maintenance chore?
I like to keep our boat clean, so I could see having to remove these semi-regularly to mop out spilled liquids, wayward peanuts and loose change....
 
I have the same floor panel on my 2006 22 cruiser, I like having the option to lift/remove to clean underneath, they are not attach to anything. On the water, you can remove one at a time to clean that half, or on land they can be taken out of the boat entirely. I have a roof over the cockpit, but no side curtain and have found that very little water collect in there. I also have 2 bilge pump (one aft at transom and one at cabin bulkhead) that prevent water from build up into the middle of the cockpit so I most often then not just leave the floor panel at home. It's one less thing to clean after the trip and I feel like I save a few pound, so I can load extra stuff;-)
Without the panel, the floor has a small curve to it but not enough to border me.
 
I had a 2006 C Dory 22 with the two part floor, and thought it was the best of the floors. I removed it, or tipped it up on edge to wash under at the end of the trip. No accumulation of unknown amount of water during a trip. We always left the panels in the boat on trips.

The two bench seat model of the 22 was the commuter model. Some owners made a removable galley to fit over the starboard side seat. If all you use the boat for is taking folks out for a ride, or fishing, then it works well. It can be a cruiser with use of portable appliances in the cockpit as an alternative. You still have the porti potty in the forward cabin, and with the canvas enclosure, some privacy in the "head".
