SPOT is not the perfect device for personal safety and Search And Rescue, but it is a good accessory for such. It can be used for tracking that works well. The rebate is for the price of the device, which is a good deal, but you still have to pay the annual user fee.

Not only is SPOT good for safety, but it also lets your family and friends know where you are if you're on a wilderness trip. In addition to the SOS button, it also has an OK button, which sends emails to and address list you specify beforehand, giving an "I'm OK" message, along with a link to an online map showing your location. Every year I do a solo canoe/kayak trip in Canyonlands National Park in Utah, and though there's no cellphone coverage, I can let my wife and other friends know I'm OK every day.
