Well I was giving two windlass's a while back by Charlie. One with a bad motor and one with bad gears. I finally got to tearing them down. first off both motors work and the gears seem to be free. I have tore one down and found several thing I really don't like. The main cause of most problems people are having with these wenches is corrosion. I have one tore down and it seems to have a lot of corrosion in the gear box and the motor its self. I am not sure where or why water is getting into the gear box but i do know why its getting from the gear box to the motor housing. There are three flat set screws that hold the gear housing to the motor housing. Unfortunately these screws are taped into the motor housing top and Thur it. So if water gets in to the gear box or between the gear box and the motor case water will have a direct line to the motor. The inside of the motor and the magnates and there housing along with some of the winding are corroded. I will put it back together tomorrow and then strip the other one. Take a look in my album on page three for pictures. I have one of all the parts in a line. If you have not pulled yours out of the boat and tore it apart, re greased and then re seal it does not look that hard. I will post more as I put it back together and how I real it and with what.

Tom, maybe you forgot what I told you.... One of them, Jan's, definitely had bad gears. He opened them and that's the one you opened first, I guess. When I opened mine, they were fine. My problem was that my motor seemed to bog down at times, not due to load. We had hoped that his motor on my gearbox would be the solution.

Hi charlie, I see what you are saying. I will know more after I have the other one tore down. The one i opened did not have bad gears. I think that if I get it cleaned up and the motor clean it should be fine. Pat is also sending me two more that he has. If I owned on already I would pull it and clean and reseal it . Its just to easy for water to get into these units.

Pat is sending you one more - you already have the one that was Jan's, which Charlie ended up with! Ought to be able to cobble something together out of three!

Hmm, corrosion in the wenches?

I have found that cleaning up the edges and using Permatex® Form-A-Gasket® No. 2 Sealant makes for good water tight seals in winches.
