Real world experience with a 6 hp kicker on a 22 cruiser

I have a 2011 4hp Yamaha longshaft bought new a year ago with about 10 hours on it now that I am considering getting rid of. It is the same engine as the 6HP but it revs a little lower as the fueling is restricted. Weighs about 60lbs. I want an 8hp for another small boat and could just move it to the larger boat when needed. As is, it is just a bit under powered to plan our 12 footer with more than one person on board. And I only really need it on the larger boat for a kicker for special trips and an 8hp motor could serve that purpose alright.

Well, I have no real experience with a 6 hp on a C-22, so I probably should keep my mouth shut here.

I know a sailboat with its displacement hull is easy to propel with modest power. It, however, has the "gravitas" of a substantial keel and rudder. I'm sure the 30,000 # boat was swinging a pretty substantial wheel providing adequate thrust. My thoughts are a concerning being found is some combination of heavy seas, strong current and/or wind with 6 hp on a 3500 # boat.
We cruise rivers often having currents of up to 4 mph.
I have had one motor fail on the Mississippi and had to complete our trip on the remaining 40 hp. motor. Minor problem. We made it back to our marina in normal time rather than using the kicker to seek shelter or "limp in" after dark. I don't troll for fishing and see the kicker as an emergency measure. If I had a single main, I would surely have one. I am not a speed demon. We did our recent 200 miles on the Suwannee River mostly at displacement speed. 5 mph upstream ,9 mph downstream.
Perhaps I don't understand how people use their kickers.
