Rain, rain and more rain

It is wet here, looks like I might have some minor flooding and need to do some work on one of my roads.

I have had some PM’s, emails and I am sure I have to respond to some post. Have to read them 1st.

The third floor roof of the office is leaking, so I have to get in to see what needs to be done there also. May be late tonight or sometime tomorrow before I get back on this site and respond to the emails and PM’s.

Just didn’t want you guys to think I was ignoring you.

My in-laws house flooded yesterday...7-8' covering the entire property in Granite Falls. 40' motor home is submerged up to the windshield, the Ford Explorer in the driveway is totally under water, two dogs still trapped in the house and the family cat is MIA after trying to jump into the rescue boat and coming up short. The boat was there to rescue my wife's brother who was trapped by the flood. Plus it's still raining. :x They are going back this morning to check and see if the river has receded so the cleanup can begin. Note to self: don't build house near river...

Pat and Patti are okay. If you saw where they live you would understand. They live up a hill that almost stopped them from buying the 25 and being able to get it home.

Thanks David, That's good to hear.

It's just amazing for us to see the difference between being here in the "banana belt" where we had about 1/2 inch of rain and back there in "America".
We used to live in Maple Valley and know just how quick it gets wet over there.

Lot of rain during the game last night. Love when the Raiders make records like they did last night :thup only team to ever get shut-out on MNF twice in one season---- LOVE IT :D

Several of us from our volunteer fire department spent all day yesterday assisting folks in the Granite Falls area in the evacuation process. Then proceeded down to the Silvana area to assist, but they cancelled us after our arrival. Jessica spent the night in town with friends, and Carol made it home at about 2200 Hours. SR 530 from Arlington to our house opened at about 0100 HRS this AM. We were the first to get through there. Since, we live on a hill, there is never any problem at our place.....just sometimes can't get to town....(which isn't all bad... )

The flooding situation has gone beyond the 'fun' stage, including record high flooding along the Wilson R. and Tillamook.

Nevertheless . . .

For those outside the Seattle area, there used to be a local show (syndicated for awhile in other markets) called 'Almost Live', a sort of low budget take-off on Saturday Night Live. Among some of the regulars were the 'High Fivin' White Guys', cavorting around different Seattle landmarks. Of course, such a show would not be complete without the 'Local Evening News'.

"And now we go live, on location, where reporter Daniel Johnson is covering the annual 100-year flood in the Skagit, Snohomish, and Skykomish valleys." Unfortunately, this doesn't seem like too much of an exaggeration. As above, "Mental Note: Do not build next to a river!"

We do have a creek just beyond our rear property line. For 3-4 years at a time it is converted into a beaver pond, and then the beaver disappears for a couple of years and the dam gradually falls apart. A new dam appeared in June/July, and the back third of our property is now underwater. We actually prefer this -- the wildlife viewing is an improvement over the grassy/muddy wetlands. (Blue heron, beaver, river otter, mink (once), egrets, kingfisher, redwing blackbird, wood ducks, mergansers, raccoon, nutria (PITA), 'possum, Canada geese (~ PITA), mallards, killdeer, green heron, coyote, green wing teal, buffleheads, ringnecks, widgeons, . . . the list goes on. [alas, no dolphins; no orca]. Above the pond is an 8-foot bank, and in the '100-year flood' of 1996 the water never got higher than about 4 vertical feet from the upper yard. At this point it is flowing over the road downstream, creating a very wide (100 foot) spillway, so we feel pretty secure.

Take care, everyone!

I have spent most of the last two days repairing the heating/air conditioning system on the office roof. The pan in the bottom of it rotted out and allowed water to get into the building. It is dry now but the units are old (34+ years) and will have to be replaced soon.

I hope everyone else with flooding/water problems from this rain is doing OK now. Flooding doesn’t seem to have been as bad here, as it usually is. Most years two or three times, the Chehalis River will flood the road on the way to my place and I will have a 1000 feet of 12 to16 inches of water to drive through. Some years it has been as much as five feet of water.

For all of us who have been watching the huge amounts of debris floating down the rivers in the Puget sound area, please remember all that "Stuff" is now in the sound and will be floating around for many days.
We live on the east side of Whidbey on Holmes harbor which is non flushing and usually does not get much trash, but with the sunshine today I see large patches of brown water with logs and all sorts of things floating around.

Watch your props !! (and more, there's whole trees out there)
