Questions regarding windshield wiper replacement...

Alrighty then! Now yours is done, could you come on up and do mine? I have two new pantagraphic arms to replace the existing ones but am scared spitless to come within two feet of the wiper motors and arms...David, there are two bottles of expensive wine in it for you if you want to come over to our house the next time you are at the brewery - no foolin'!!
 
And the wrap-up: We went out this afternoon on Wild Blue; lots of folks out and about with the temps pushing 90º. It gave me ample opportunity to run through some wake and toss some spray on the windshield. What a difference! This motor is quieter and faster than the original one. The 110º sweep is more coverage than the way it is set from the factory, and the wiper parks well to the side (making for better visibility). I won't go through the frustration of removing and resetting the port wiper... but when it needs replacing, I will set it to park to the left side and 110º sweep.

But, bottom line: there was definitely a problem right off the bat with the original motor. It was obnoxiously loud (I would have known this had I spent more time on the port side); quieter is better, faster is better.

Pat, my buddy, you can do this. Lube it up good with WD-40 the day before you want to remove the arm. I've often said that my best tool is a Mastercard. :wink: Having done one, I'm sure I could cut 75% of the time off a second one. If we're gonna do this shop-thing, you're gonna have to get your hands bloody, too.

Although I think David would really like the Tropical Tip of Texas. 8)

Both AFI wiper motors on my 24 yr. old 22' CD are original and work just fine.......so far; knock on wood. I use them a lot too.
When the boat was new I moved the port motor to the center window and put the hand operated one on the port. It gives my wife something to do and worry about in rough weather.

HIGH TIDE under the covers for the winter............damn

Roger - glad my frustrations could provide entertainment. BTW, the weather here is absolutely tropical right now: 88º, sunny, light breeze. We anchored out by the jetties, Joan made bacon and eggs for breakfast, I paddled around in the kayak, we watched dolphins and pelicans - what a great day! We saw some ducks this morning, too... the early migrators. We ran out into the Gulf; it was like a lake... we ran with the center window open (now, that's smooth cruising). Beautiful deep blue water. Back inside, the Laguna is a deep turquoise. Swim suits and barefoot - my kinda wardrobe.

Jack, when your wife is running the wiper, does she have time to say, "OH MY GOD, WE'RE GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!"??? :wink One of these days, I'll get around to wiring a switch for the port wiper over on that side. I like the idea of a wiper on that middle windshield - is there any problem with it interferring with the opening of that window?

My old CD does not have an opening windshield window. Not an option back then. I wished it did though.
I am contemplating putting a 3rd AFI motor on the port window to give my wife a break though. Next year.

I distinctly remember someone adding an electric wiper to an opening center window and saying that the lifting feature of the wiper arm accomodated the opening of the window.

I don't remember whether it was on a 22, a 25, or a TC, however.

I do think the 25, and perhaps the TC, have more room for the motor, though, as the electronics shelf on the 22 fits right down against the top of the window frame, leaving no room for the wiper motor above where it would have to be to open the window.

Make it a momentary switch so when she lets go it parks. Nuttin' will burn up them motors faster than running on a dry window trying to smear the salt. While you're at it, put a momentary switch down low near the helm so you can swipe the wipers with your foot. That's my "one of these days" wiper related project.

I've got a couple manual wipers from my old CD22, and another future project is putting one of them on the center window. B~C did that and he simply pivots it off the glass to open the window.

Oh, and watch it Jim. A herd of gooses just flew over my house headed your way.

Sorry to nit-pick, but I believe the term is "bunch of gooses". I wouldn't want anyone to think you are ignorant boater trash. :wink

Follow those gooses, my northern friends; they have wisdom far beyond what you might expect from... um, gooses's brains. They know what direction to head when the temperature heads towards solid-water range.

I put an ON-OFF switch above the port window. Stopped the requests to run the port wiper, and freed up a switch. One of the better moves I made.

By the way, the wipers were wired port to starboard and vice versa from the factory.

Jimbo, wouldn't that be a "Gaggle of Geeses"....and on the subject of window wipers....I thought you had Radar....and were IFR rated....pilot.

What do you need with wipers...you got electronics.

Yep, radar. Yep, multi/comm/instr rated. But, without those wipers, how are we gonna see through the spray to see the dolphins playing? They may show up on radar if they jump high enough, but we like to see their smiling faces... way more fun than those gooses... geeses... goosi.

Roger - North in the spring, south in the fall. Yeah, that sounds about right. 8)

I realized at the time that Jack has a "Classic" 22, not the more recent (1987 and later) model, so he has a different arrangement above and below his windows. I think the interfering electronics shelf above was introduced with the new models in 1987, as was the dash tray below. The roof line and hood/brow of the earlier model are a little different, too.

I tried to add a center electric wiper to my '87 Cruiser, putting the motor between the windows on the post between them on the inside. It was very difficult to get the sweep right with the geometry necessitated. I finally gave up and installed a manual wiper instead left over when I added the electrics to Port & Starboard.

Should have called Jim and Pat's Wiper Swiper Service and had Pat come down on a service call with his Penumatic Impact Wrench and Lug Levitator Machine.

That would be me with the 3rd wiper (center), probably others have it too, at least on the CD25. I also added 2 more switches to the passenger side to control the port and center wipers (only the captain has control of all 3! :wink: ) No problem raising/lowering the center window, wiper just goes up/down with it.

To solve the dry salty windows and wiper problem I installed a manually operated windshield washer system. Works great.

also...........it snowed in anchorage last night. Time for me, the wife and those "gaggle of geeses" to get the hell out of dodge for the winter.
That also solves my lawn mowing problem. now everybodies lawn look the same.

Hi Jack (don't say that in the security line at the airport),

We also have a manual washer: a squeeze bottle with water and a bit of vinegar... really cuts through the dried salt nicely. :wink:
 
For what it may be worth, I have an old Freeport Marine Catalog which shows several wiper motors, arms, and about all the blades you'd need. I don't know if they're still in business, but if so should be a good source.
