Question on repowering a 2004 CD 22

Hello all, I think I have read every single thread related to power on the CD 22. I have the original single Honda 50 hp, 2004 model. It runs well, but for what we want to do, it just isn't going to work, so I am repowering.

At first I thought I would go with twin Hondas, but the extra $5k over a single larger engine just doesn't feel practical. What am I getting for the money besides looking cool and maybe a little efficiency?

I have pretty much settled on the Suzuki 115hp with hydraulic steering. Can anyone comment on the weight of that motor (400 lbs) vs handling? It is roughly the same cost to go Honda 90hp (360 lbs) as Suzuki 115. The main use will be running around Puget Sound as well as fishing from Westport and hopefully a trip up the inside passage.

Please let me know if there's a reason I should avoid the 115 or go another way.

I put the 115 Suzuki on my 2006 22’ C-Dory last year and just love the performance, fuel mileage, and power with better boat handling. The Suzuki replaced my 70 hp. Yamaha

I am in the same boat and just put down a deposit yesterday and scheduled my rigging. Like you, I think I read every thread here and elsewhere. Also like you, I had a single motor that wasn't really enough unless loaded light and no currents (75hp.)

I won't get into the brand debates, but from pouring over all the CARB peak-torque data and all the speed@RPM and MPG numbers posted by folks, it made it clear that the larger-displacement motors (Like the Suzuki 115) are the way to go for what most people want.

I know this is often repeated in other motor threads, but for me, the practicalities of shuttling the boat around to get it rigged really narrowed my focus to the brands sold by my local dealer. I would start with what is local and who you want to deal with.

In my shopping, I did find that a few WA dealers have leftover Suzuki 140As at a steep discount (Same weight as 115.)

The current (2022/2023) larger-displacement motors in this class are:
Honda 115/140
Mercury 115/90/75
Tohatsu 115/90/75 (No longer Hondas)
Suzuki 115/140
 
I would go with the Suzuki 115. You will have more power than you need 90% of the time. The other 10% you will be delighted to have that extra reserve. 30 mph is pretty much the top practical speed you will want to run the boat at. If you do the inland passage, the boat will most likely be fully loaded, and that is a place the 115 will shine. (I run the 140 on my Caracal cat for almost 15 years--same block as the 115)
 
Thanks for all the great replies!! I think I am just going to have Ryan at Sportcraft in Portland install the 115. (Unless that 140 deal is too good :-) )

WCF, which dealers had the leftover 140s?
 
Inland Motors is the one that gave me quotes on the Suzuki 140A and 115, but I also saw them listed on some of the dealer-sites closer to you. Inland also gave me really good quotes on rigging costs. This was a few weeks ago however, inventory may have changed :D

If I had time to make the drive to Sportcraft, that's where I would go also.

I bought a motor from them when I lived a lot closer, and they were good to deal with.
