Made deposit for potential purchase today on 2003 22 Cruiser

Thinking this would be a good entry for me into the C-Dory story

Thing is I've never set foot on one of these hulls

I do have a 17 Holby Skiff though so I'm familiar with the dory platform

Seeing that this 2003 looks nearly new with only 179 hours showing

What are things that I should look at when I actually go see it?

Hard to believe the little 75 Honda has only been used that much in all these years

Dealer is supposed to be getting it set up for a sea trial

Any heads up would be greatly appreciated in regards to lack of use items to look for and anything else too

First time I ran across this site was today

Sorry I missed the rendezvous at Hontoon Island this past March

HoJo and I were there this past week and put about a hundred miles on our little dory

This is the canal between the St. Johns River and Hontoon Dead River

Look for any soft places in the cockpit deck or other places that has cored areas with penetrations. Look for signs of water leakage inside of the boat--streaks down the sides etc. With the outboard in trailering position, put your full weight on the lower leg. Look for transom flex. None of these issues is fatal, but it may mean a little more work to bring the boat up to good standards.

A boat with low hours, often is a platform for your to install what you want. Items which make the 22 a better boat include trim tabs and a Permatrim on the outboard. The 75 and 90 are the same block--and at lower speeds you will have the same characteristics. When you get to upper speeds (mid 20's) the 75 will not have as much power. The tabs and Permitrim will allow you to push the bow down into chop, and give a better ride. Conversely, you can bring the bow up in down winds swells, and again have a better ride.

In the Sea trial, take a device which will give the boat speed--you would like to see in the mid 20's at least with a light boat. There are so many ways to customize the boat--spend some time looking at albums.

Things I like to add: Camper back, as part of the Bimini cover. This gives an extra room. Cockpit slant back to keep water out of the cockpit when the boat is not being used--either in water on on trailer. Inside curtains to block the windows.
Electric windshield wipers. Windlass, if you do much anchoring. I like to have 2 vhf radios--and AIS reception. Get an MMSI number (Boat US free if you are a member). This allows the DSC distress system to fully function. I have added an extra bilge pump in the two 22's I have owned. One in the sump just by the transom drain plug, and one either at the forward end of the cockpit or inside the cabin bulkhead, with a drain hole thru that bulkhead--and a "dam" around this sump and pump (step with lid works well !)

The Hondas of that vintage are carburetor engines, and the carburetors should be drained if you are not going to use the engine for more than a few weeks.

The St. John's river is now one of our favorites. Tom and Joyce have promised my close friend C.A. a personal tour of the river this fall, when he recovers from his second hip surgery (tomorrow is the surgery). We will also probably tag along. If not we will see you next March--come early and stay after for the excellent cruises.

There is the "meet in the middle" first week of Sept--in Alton Ill (if any part of it left after the floods!)--another great gathering and many of us do trips after. We are doing more exploring on the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers this year. You are welcome to join us.

As you find issues--and you probably will--just ask questions. There are plenty of folks to help or refer you to places where help is available.

Been looking but just started today

I don't see us really traveling too far with this boat

Mostly Florida and south Georgia

I've had larger boats and smaller ones too

We're empty nesters now

And are enjoying boats a bit easier to launch and trailer

And yea, I'll see y'all over on the St. Johns for sure

Had a place there in Salt Springs until about five years ago

"Soft Places" this is why I asked. As I said, I've never set foot on one of these boats and was hoping with all the experience combined on here I could get a good idea as to any inherent places to look. Thanks for helping

Now as far as this old carbureted Honda 75 is concerned...

Boat tag says it's rated for 70 to 100 with the optimal engine being the 70. Is this just BS? Or do you think I'll be surprised at how good it does as is?

I know you know. What size fuel injected motor would you suggest so I can price it into this deal?

Are the new 115 models as fuel efficient as this old 75?

And as far as sound, are Yamaha and Suzuki comparable? Both dealers are right down the street from my old camp out in Weeki.

Last engine I bought was six-cylinder fuel injected two-smoker of about this same vintage.

"Sea trial" you nailed it. Got to make sure whom ever takes me out has a gps phone since I don't. Yea, it's ridiculous; I know.

I don't know though whether I'm trying to talk myself into this or out right now, any help would be greatly appreciated as I've already said.

...and are these old Honda carbs easy to drain?

Or do you just run the thing empty after every use? Like we used to always do.

Used to love my old 200 OMC

Even out on the water...

If there was a problem with the carbs, I could just dump the separation filter and then drain the carbs real easily
 
Sure my wife is going to want a port side forward facing front seat. Has anyone converted their cruiser to sit like an Angler for the passenger?

We have the convertible front passenger seat. Never put it in the forward facing position. The 22 is not that big and the forward facing aft dinette seat works just fine for the "navigator". The ride is also better for the passenger at the aft dinette seat when in rougher water.

Other than to try it out once, the only time I moved it was when I painted the cabin interior (very handy for that). For our use the convertible seat is not worth the lost storage space.
 
Yes, people have converted the forward seat--in fact that is how the "Barber" sliding seat began. My wife also sits at the aft seat. As noted better ride, Table to rest book on other items on. I pad if we need her to watch any navigation perimeters (Most modern chart plotters are wi fi ennobled, and will transmit image to an I pad--plus some allow control of the MFD.

The carb Honda's are good engines, Not that hard to drain the carbs; just one screw on the bottom to drain; each of the 4. (bottom is a little harder to get too.). I have had both Yamaha, and Suzuki in the last few years--both are good. In the 115 arena, I prefer the Suzuki. The reason for the 115, is that most are about the same weight as the 90, and you can then carry a heavy load.

Run the 75 for a while--it may well be enough. The original boats were powered with 70 2 strokes--since then, folks have been running increasing heavier loads--for example we have all food and gear for a month, at 3700 feet. Including freezer, refer, 3 group 31 batteries etc... I believe that the 115 will probably use a bit more fuel, than the Honda--but at the same speed, should be pretty close. Not worth the price for any little gain in mileage.

Soft places would be where there is deck or hull penetrations for example screw holes. There are easy ways to repair and prevent these.

If this was a two-smoker I'd know where that oil line came from, but...

Seeing it's an '03 Honda 70

Do you suppose they oiled the prop shaft?

Should I be concerned?

Or is it just excess fuel that didn't burn?

Certainly would like to hear what y'all think

I didn't really see from where the oil mist is coming, but here's a few free comments.

If it's the oil under the prop, check the lower end oil. See if it's white. If not, tighten the plugs and try again.

Journey On's Honda motor has ~1000 hrs over the last 14 years. I just replaced the water pump/drive shaft and shift shaft seals, because the lower end oil was turning white. The old seals were trash. Replacing the seals was easy as was seeing they needed to be replaced. The prop seals are harder to replace, so I'm waiting to see if the upper seals fixed the problem

If the oil is coming from the top end (power head?) any leak should be easy to see and trace.

One on a boat I'm looking to purchase

Just talked to the salesman and he says it's fuel

And that a mechanic is going to look into it
