Prop Size For CD 22 with E-Tec 90

I have just replaced a 2003 Honda 50 on a 2003 22 cruiser with a 2010 Evinrude E-Tec 90. The trial run was 24-25 K at 4400 rpm. The idle speed at about 600 rpm in forward gear is 3 K. This is the dealer's first CD installation. He says the prop is 17" and will replace it with a 15'" which should give about 4700 rpm and slow the idle forward speed. I would appreciate any recommedations about prop size and pitch. The motor manual says the operating range is 4500 to 5500 rpm. Based on C-Brat information, Bennett trim tabs were also installed.

Good move to replace the engine. You should be able to get close to 30 mph with the 90 (that is what the old 2 stroke Evinrudes did)--not sure about the gearing, but I had a 15 and a 13" for an older Evinrude--2 stroke.

I think that you will really like the way the boat runs with the new motor. Also experiment with engine trim and tab trim to get the best speed and effeciency. You have to trip up and down with both, watching the tach.
 
Outboard motors are usually propped so that with a light load the engine RPMs are near the top end of the WOT (wide open throttle) range.

Similarly, with a heavy or full load, the motor RPM's must at least reach the lower end of the WOT band.

It is not good for the motor to operate with a prop that will not allow the motor to reach at least the lower end of the WOT RPM band.
 
I had a 90 ETEC several years ago and found the best prop on my CD22 was the Solas 4 blade in 15 pitch. The 17 pitch was sluggish, the 3 blade 15 pitch was a good general purpose, but you could full the additional thrust with the 4 blade.
 
I would try a 13" as well, as the E-Tecs like to be close to the top of their RPM band. 5000 to 5200 is the target sspot according to BRP, so the 15" may not quite get you there.
 
On a lot of these applications, we do seem to come down to the conclusion that for heavy loading or higher elevations, that the 15 inch pitch is a bit too much, and the 13 a little too little, and wind up wishing for a 14, which, of course, isn't very commonly available, and has to be made from a 13 or 15 somehow modified one way or another.

I think there are both Quicksilver and Solas 3 blade stainless props in 14 pitch. I used the Quicksilver on my Honda 90 and it was the best prop I found for the weight/boat/motor combo on my 22.
 
Based on the suggestion from Matt Gurnsey, a 13" prop was installed. It now runs about 5400 rpm with a speed of 24K. However on the days I have been out, the Chesapeake Bay was not calm enough to trim out for top rpm. Also the forward idle speed is now about 0.9K slower making it easier to manuever. For the rougher days, cruise speed is about 4000 rpm is about 16K +/- 2k depending on wave levels. At cruise my wife says that the engine noise level is much lower than with the 15". THANKS MATT !!!

Also during the new engine installation, I had the outboard controls moved to a postion I saw in photo's posted on this web site. Previouly the controlls were too low, too far back and to close to the side. Making it difficult to go in and out of reverse rapidly. Also it was easy to accidentlly hit the tilt switch. raising the motor and loosing reverse power.
Now I can actualy back up facing backwards using my left hand on the contolls. Coupled with an Edson Spinner, the boat is now much easier tio manuver backwards. THANKS C-BRATS!!!
