Privacy on the 16ft cruiser

Crumlishes

New member
We (wife & I) have owned a 1993 16ft C-Dory cruiser since 1999 & love it!

We live on one of the upstate NY Finger Lakes & keep the C-Dory in a hoist year round so it is always handy (take the battery in during the winter).

The only fly in the ointment is that our cruising radius is limited by the lack of privacy: we have the portapotty that came with the boat but have never used it in all the years we have had the boat - just too many other boats & cottages along the lakes & along the canal (Erie & its branches that link some of the Finger Lakes together).

We do still have the sloped-back cockpit cover that came with the boat which we only use when we leave the boat on a mooring.

Have read the various posts about different camping cockpit covers & would like to hear how they have worked out to provide privacy & which designs work & which dont.

We have some good canvas workers around hear so suspect that if we had a photo & some design tips we could get a cover made.

Thanx in advance for any help.

I would think that a full camper back with curtains would give you the privacy you desire. There is a Sun Shower curtain which I own--not sure if they are still made--which has inflatable upper and lower lips, and will hang form any cross member--such as a bimini top bow:

This is quite compact, and is large enough to shower in (between 30" to 36" on each side. It certainly gives privacy. Many of day boats such as pontoon boats, use a similar arrangement.

If you do get a camper back made, you can have the canvas maker put in a small removable privacy screen for porta potty use. I had one made for use on my 22. It snaps to the cross bar of the camper enclosure and also zips to the starboard side at the top. Snaps hold it to the bulk head on the starboard side and velcro provides an easy opening door towards the port side. It has served us well.

If you're sitting on the portapotty either in the cabin or in the well deck you are usually too low for anyone on shore to see you. And, if they do, will you ever see them again?

Just add window covering's and with mooring cover and you have your privacyDSC00004_Copy.sized.jpgYou have some nice cruising areas that your 16 should do very well

we keep our boat on Seneca Lake and had Gordie Maghee Canvas in Brewerton make our camper canvas a couple years ago, they did a great job, there are a few photos in our album. We also have the window coverings and they come in very handy while tied up on canal sea walls for the night. One privacy issue I needed to resolve was the forward hatch, again while tied up on a sea wall. Folks walking by the boat had a view in to the vee berth especially with the lights on up there. My wife hemmed a 36x52 inch piece of sunbrella and I put brass grommets in the corners. I attach one end under the brow of the cabin top and slope the other end down over the hatch and attach it to the bow rails. The cover allows us privacy and the means to keep the hatch open with the bug screen in place for ventilation, even in the rain.
