Prince Edward Island anyone?

After searching, I'm surprised at the lack of information about Prince Edward Island on this site. Even El and Bill have no entry, which quite possibly could mean that there are better places to cruise around in a C-Dory, like the Thousand Islands, Lake Champlain, or the Maine coast. But in any case, my wife and daughter, being Anne of Green Gables fans, would love to go and my son and I are ready for any adventure that may involve fishing and eating lobsters. Has anyone ever explored Prince Edward Island? Thanks

Hi not been. But plan to go. We plan on Maine and area by 2 seasons away. PEI has an excellent maritime tradition and toutes its boating destination. Lots of marinas. We plan on PEI and Newfoundland etc. I want to cruise into Lunenburg Nova Scotia aboard a dory. How fitting! Go for it. George

Sounds like PEI and Lunenburg would be natural destinations for us dory lovers....

"We build Dories. Day in, day out, one after the other. We have been building dories for more than 90 years now and, except for a few power tools, we build them the same way we’ve always built them, with the same wood, the same fastenings, the same oars, the same paint, the same everything! We like it that way. It works and it will continue to work as long as the sea is salty, and the ocean has waves."

That's from The Dory Shop in Lunenburg. :thup :beer :beer :thup

Prince Edward Island is the only place I've been where the farmyards have large fishing boats parked right next to the tractor! We were impressed by wonderful local down home people, no tourist type pressure to buy junk and a very interesting island.

Now to Lunenberg - If I'd seen Lunenberg 30 years ago I'd still be there. Lots of German influence in Lunenberg ( and alot of French spoken in places on PEI)

Both areas are terrific in all respects. Roger

Hi Joe, we toured PEI (on the hard) in 2000. Stayed by the Point Prim lighthouse. Toured all the Anne of Green Gables sites. We loved it.

If you contact TOURISMPEI.CA they will be happy to mail you any info you need on attractions, accommodations, services, etc.

You also mentioned the Thousand Islands - the St. Lawrence River is a great cruising destination as well. I entered my Stingray in the Gananoque poker run last July. We enjoyed the run so much we did it again on the Sunday before coming home(at a more leisurely pace).

Wherever you decide - welcome to Canada.

Regards, Rob

Joe, we never made it to PEI, but we cruised around Halifax and St. Margaret's Bay in Nova Scotia. Beautiful area, lovely people. Be prepared for huge tide changes, rocky bottoms, and deep water. I tried to tie up to a vacant mooring or a floating dock wherever possible. Transporting boat and trailer by ferry from Maine was straightforward, but be sure you have with you the titles to your boat AND your trailer for customs inspection. Have fun!

George. I grew up on Vancouver Island and it was always my dream to go around it in "my boat" and then go over to the other side (east coast) and go around that big island there (Newfoundland) too. How about, you go check it out and then your next time there I'll be ready to run along with.

Happy dreaming,

Harvey

Hi Guys, just so you know there is no ferry from Maine to Nova Scotia anymore. I have a summer home in Nova Scotia, in Prospect Bay, two bays over from St Margret’s. I have a float dock with power and water. Depending on when and if you plan this trip and whether I am at my home, you would be more than welcome. There is also a small marina, with no real accommodation, except food and bar 1/2 mile from my home. It’s about 1 hour by boat to Halifax and there are also 3 yacht clubs in Halifax and also I think there is a “Free” dock downtown.

Let me know if you need any info, as I have been all around the Maritimes, but not by boat. There is also a lot of rocks and shoals, so make sure you have good charts. The tides tend to run about 6 feet or so. This is not the Bay of Fundy.

Jim

Nope they shut the service down, I think two years ago and the South Shore of Nova Scotia is really having a hard time because of it. So its drive, fly or use your boat to get to NS now.
