Folks, please, let's keep our heads about us. Ed Sullivan did not create the downward spiral, he merely showed us what the general public found entertaining. It was a sign of the times. The downward spiral started when the general public sat on their butts on the couch and didn't get up and change the channel or turn the tube off. For you youngsters, this was before TV remotes.
On a personal note, the Beatles changed my life. I saw all those girls screaming (I was 10 years old at the time) and said to myself, "Self, you have to learn to play guitar." If not for the long hair and guitar playing, I never would have been able to attract The Blonde.
Jim Morrison changed my view of fire... as in, "Come on, baby, light my fire..."
Liberace changed my wardrobe... but, I digress.
Now, Topo Gigio... what a talent; you don't see a lot of talking mice these days.
And my butt still hurts from the spanking I got when I tried to learn how to spin plates on sticks. How was I to know that was the "good china"?? Looked like a bunch of old plates to me.
And don't get me started on how "American Idol" is just an updated version of Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour.
I think the downward spiral started with shows like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and Sky King. All those guys, no real love interest, and people only got shot in the hand. Bonanza? Four guys and their Chinese male housekeeper living out in the boonies? No one thought that was... um, unusual? Gunsmoke? Marshall Matt hanging out with that whore-mongering Miss Kitty? And did anyone really believe that Festus could ever replace Chester??? And Sky King? "Niece" Penny?? Riiiiiiiiight.
The country's going to Hell in a handbasket, and I don't even know what a handbasket is! :disgust
Happy New Year,
Jim
