Please Help Me Price Out a Used 22' in WI

Hi All,

So as to cover all my options when it comes to replacing my 16' C-Dory Cruiser Rabbit's Hutch, I am looking at a new 19' as well as used 22' in my area.

I found a local dealer in WI who has a 2001 22' with under 200hrs on twin honda 40s. However, this 22 was ordered with no factory options at all. I mean it doesn't even have electric wipers, water tank, no stove/heater, minimal electronics, nothing. Therefore, I'm thinking the asking price of about $37K is pretty high. There should be thousands in wiggle room here, I hope.

I'm thinking that I could purchase this boat for a very reasonable price and over time add what I need. Appears to be in great shape but I have yet to see it in person.

What is a reasonable market value for something this bare bones? Here is a link if someone has the time to look a bit closer for me as I'm uneducated on the 22' to date:

Gary, it does have the "tall top" option and the only real surprise is that there is no water tank. I believe that's a standard item and it has the sink installed, so the question is "what happened to the tank"?. It also has shore power and the coveted (by some) twin 40's with low hours. Then there's the "J" factor; "Jeeze, it's local." Very much a positive in your case. It does not have the cooler under the helm, which many of us pass on and replace with the door/shelf like the one shown.

No electronics is better than old electronics, just like no canvas is better than 5 year old canvas. No stove is inconvenient but easily solved. That option would likely be your biggest expense after electronics and canvas. No wiper motors is solvable and a whole lot of us have none or one.

IMHO it's within 5-15% of a fair price, but Pat (Byrdman) should be able to give you a better idea. He buys and sells all the time. :smiled

Wish it wasnt on sale through a dealer and available through the actual owner. But I cant find the boat's name on our web site here...

From the pictures it doesn't appear to have the water tank vent on the port side so maybe it doesn't have a tank. I just can't understand why someone would order a boat with a sink and no tank.

I can kind of understand that. At least on our 22 and for our uses -mostly day trips fishing and the occasional overnighters or two always at marina's - I've never come close to using 20 gals of water. The water always tastes a little "plasticy" and stale since I don't go through that much so I carry bottled water (and beer and wine and soda) to drink. The water at the sink I only use to do dishes, rinse my hands off and rinse salt off of fishing tackle prior to drying and storage. I bet I don't go through more that a 2-4 gallons between opportunities to fill the tank (almost all marina's I go to have water at the dock). I've even thought of yanking the 20 gal tank out of mine and putting a smaller tank in to get some more storage but that would require effort and there's many other changes on my list. However, if I was to do it all over again fresh, I might try to get a smaller tank put in either the same location or elsewhere and put something else under the port aftmost seat (a wine rack would be good for my uses).

Looks like a good boat! I'm planning on a drive to Duluth soon. So I'd be happy to check it out for you. The price seems somewhat high to me. See what Honda financing for a new one will do for you. It may be worth a call.

That Blue trim with twins looks sharp.

I have not installed my Water tank yet and Im not sure if I will. I have not needed it. Fresh water on Lake Superior has not been a problem. This may be difficult to understand if your from salt water.

Really............ I like how spartan it is. (The Blue boat) Sometimes less is more. Gives you something you can customize to your needs and desires. There is a Big Advantage to by one already wired and in one piece. BELIVE ME.

As for a proper price... any ideas? It has been suggested that given her age and equipment, the asking price is perhaps 15% over market value. I would love to hear some additional opinions on that before I travel 8 hours and start negotiating numbers...

A couple of additional questions, what does it usually cost to add the stove/heater including installation if the cabinet requires cutting and the such?

Also, with the option of a forward facing port side seat, is the mechanism adjustable so that when at anchor, the galley table can be used from both sides?

The Wallas Stove / Heater:

This unit costs about $1500 or so. Installation from a marine dealer would be about another $400-$500, perhaps plus a few small parts and adhesives, etc. The factory gets $2500 for the unit as an installed option. Could you buy the unit and do it yourself?

The Convertible Port Seat:

The seat is specifically designed so that it does convert back and forth from a forward facing passenger seat to a regular aft facing dinette seat, whether at anchor or going forward.

Tyboo Mike was the originator of this convenient feature for the 22*, and you can see his plans for the seat conversion in the Cabin and Interior Photos section of the Library. The factory offers the seat as an option for $660. Again could you do this yourself? If not, you'll probably have to take the boat back to C-Dory for the conversion unless you can find someone here on the site or locally that can do it for you. If you want the factory to do it, give them a call to get a price, since they'd be starting with a conventional seat and table installed.

* I believe the first CD-25's (known as Cruise Ships) had this feature either standard or as an option.

Gary, I believe the table folds in half (the front half hinges down and the front seat moves back) so that when in that configuration you have a half table infront of the rear seat. I also did a conversion on my 22 (see album) but used a different mechanism to achieve the moving seat.

Also I don't know if anyone has referenced the water tank. It is installed on the port side up in front of the bulkhead under the V-berth by the factory. There would be a fill port on the top of the walkway next to the port front window as well as a vent overflow on the hulls port side. Also there would be a clear sight tube mounted vertically at the rear bulkhead just inside the port side (when entering the cabin) to show the water level. Something the 25 is lacking for some reason.

Roger, I agree that the 20 gallon tank is perhaps somewhat oversized for most uses. But one of the modifications I made was to remove the plywood layer from the topside of the tank and install a drawer in that area. And one of the benefits of doing so is that removing the plywood opens up a couple of spaces, one forward and one to the port, adjacent to the tank that we find very useful in storing wine bottles, potatoes, and/or other contraband. (Doh! Perhaps I shouldn't have said that!) Especially if you boat on cold water, the wine remains the perfect temperature and potatoes could last you all summer.

I also thought 20 gallons was alot of water, And prefer bottled water. So I had CDory install a fresh water washdown Vs. a raw water wash, that way I can clean the blood (fish blood that is) out of the cockpit with fresh water. Less corrosive than rinsing with salt water, and I will use the water from the tank much quicker so it does not get as nasty. I would want the water tank anyway though, sure is nice to be able to wash your hands out there, and get the smelly jelly off before you eat a PB & J. Good luck!

Interesting. The tank on my 2005 appears to be on the port side just in front of the rear cabin bulkhead with the fill on the port gunnel just forward of the cockpit. The site gauge is the same though. What year did they switch locations?

I agree with Roger and Al. That much fresh water is overkill unless I could conveniently use it to flush my outboard. My personal physician doesn't allow me to use it for consumption anyway so it's highest and best use so far has been to trim the boat laterally to compensate for my fat arse.... :sad
