Photoshop Fun

Too cool, Dude!

Dunno why, but I've always been drawn towards black/white sketches a little moreso than color mediums. Kind of allows one's imagination to "fill in the blanks"...

If you want to add fancy virtual matting and/or picture frames via The Gimp, here's a link to a site describing how, that also contains a plugin to do it.

OK, gonna bookmark that one too! Yes, the charcoal sketches are sort of my new favorites!

I must confess that this is one of my adaptations of one of Greg's pics. He and I frequently exchange photos, so I grabbed one of his off his site, doctored it a little, and sent it back to him. He must'a liked it.......

Back up to the top! Went sailing out of Shilshole a week or so ago with my neighbor and daughter's finance's dad, turned around and snapped a shot leaving the marina. Three versions, I like them all actually, but I think I like the charcoal drawing the best (done in Gimp).

China painting:

Cutout:

Using Photoshop CS2 for Mac...my house is now a Windows free zone, OSX on the iMac and MacBook, Ubuntu on the PC ...Gimp on both the Mac and the Linux box. I like the cutout too, it is close between the cutout and the charcoal - the China painting is definitely a distant third for me...

Pat,

Nice shot. My favorite is the "Cutout". Are you using Photoshop 6?

The weather has continued bleak, so I've been compelled to spend yet more time with Photoshop. This is a composite of two photos. The pic of the MOOSE was taken by at close range by Myrna, standing on a beaver lodge! And Thunder Cape was taken a few years earlier when we were actually there rounding it. Since it's devlishly hard to get a picture of your own boat while in it, this technique is a way to immortalize your travels anywhere.

Here's how I enhanced the photos below.

1) Use the "Elliptical Selection" tool to select the area you want to focus on. In my case, I selected the heron.

2) Invert the selection so that the other portion of the photo is now the selection.

3) Add an Adjustment Layer that is Brightness/Contrast. Then adjust brightness to a -30 or another setting that you believe looks appropriate.

4) Since the edge is obvious, go to Filters, and select Gaussian Blur with a setting of about 100 pixels.

5) Click the eye icon to see your impact on the composition.

Rob Sheppard is the photographer that documented the technique in Outdoor Photography.

Because I had to resize in Photobucket, the effect is not as obvious as in Photoshop, but the background in the "After" composition is much deeper, and it makes the heron stand out more dramatically.

Let's bring this guy back up to the top. I have been playing a lot more with Gimp. I posted this one before, but this has a bit more done to it. I like this one better, morel like pen and ink stippling...

I have always approched Photoshop with the openion that if you could tell what I did with it...then I didn't do it right.
