Own a Sport Cruiser?

Any of my fellow C-Brat brothers/sisters own a Sport Cruiser also? I'm asking because the only one that I have ever seen is just the one that I purchased a week ago.

Thanks,

Hi Kevin,
I had never heard it called "Sport Cruiser" but the name seems to fit the design. I can only see the starboard interior helm and bench seat, but I am assuming it's the same setup on the port side interior with a forward facing mate seat and a bench seat behind that???.

In the past this has been called a commuter model but that was when there was a solid bulkhead in place. For fishing and that open air feel this looks to be a nice arrangement. You might consider having a canvas bulkhead installed for those rainy days.

Let's see more detailed interior pictures when you get a moment.

Mike

Mike,

You are definitely correct about having a canvass enclosure installed for the rainy days. I was told to go to an upholstery shop and ask about having a canvass alaskan bulkhead and they should know what I'm talking about.

I have done a bunch of research and what I found out was that there was a couple years when C-Dory made this model but only for a couple years and then stopped. I have tried to locate another one to see how they did the set up inside the cabin to get some ideas but have had no luck. I do like the set up without the bulkhead because it is easier to go back and forth and I use it primarily for fishing.

Kevin

Kevin,

...nice looking boat, and very functional. Depending on what sort of mod's you want to do, the opportunities are endless! The "alaskan bulkhead" might be real nice, and could be removed (or rolled up...) as needed, it could be real handy.

If you have an alaskan bulkhead fabricated you might think about having it made in three panels (port side, center door-like panel, and starboard side). doing it that way you could deploy it in a variety of configurations according to the situation/weather.

Looking at your pictures I see what looks like a yellow "ski belt" on your kicker. What's that?

Best,
Casey

Casey,

The yellow ski belt on my kicker is just something that I place on it when I'm transporting the boat to/from the lake. I do this so that the two motors won't rub against each other and if they do touch then it won't leave any marks.

As far as the Alaskan Bulkhead being made in 3 different sections you hit the nail right on the head. That is exactly how we are going to have it made. I have looked on here and seen others C Dory's and have just been trying to get some ideas on how I want to dress this one up. I have yet to come across another one that is the same set up as this one (bench seats and open bulkhead) but what I'm thinking about doing is configuring it all up for all weather fishing. I'm thinking my first three purchases will be the alaskan bulkhead, windlass anchor system, and considering the Hummingbird 900 series GPS/Fishfinder. Any ideas on your end is welcome.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevan-

If you're going to do the bulkhead out of canvas, so it can be rolled or folded up and stored aboard, I know of a person who works out of his home in Anderson (about 10 miles south of Redding) that does excellent work and can save you and Randi some money over the typical commercial shop, because of the overhead savings.

He re-upholstered my BMW Z3, and did a great job. His name is Joe Srp, and his phone #'s are 365-0395 (H) and 356-0395 (C). Address: 6519 Mossom Lane, Anderson, Ca 96007.

No connection or financial interest, just a great service provider.

Joe. :teeth :thup

Joe,

Thanks much for the heads up. I will definitely be giving him a call this next week. I took the boat out yesterday for the first time to just do a few laps. Everything worked great but I will definitely need to be investing into a bigger fishfinder/gps.

Kevin

Mike,

That is extremely nice. I got a number from Joe (Sea Wolf) and he was telling me that he knows a guy that puts them together out of his house which will cut off on the overhead. I'll be giving him a call and will see if there is a way that I can forward him the picture of yours including the top and see if that is something that he can do. I'm hoping that it is because that set up is exactly what we are looking for.

Thanks again,

Kevin

MIke,

I like the looks of your boat. I see a seat for the female captain (or admiral) and a seat for the canine second mate. I guess that leaves you (the deckhand?) standing in the cockpit to take pictures.

Joe,

I did get a hold of Joe a couple of days ago and he told me that an Alaskan Bulkhead with a roll up door and sunbrella would run anywhere from 1100.00 to 1300.00 I have not had the chance to call anywhere else to get a price yet but was curious as to if this is reasonable or not.

Let me know what you think when you get the chance. Also, if any of my other C-Brat brothers/sisters has any info don't hesitate to let me know what you think.

Thanks again,

Kevin-

I can't comment on the price, as I have nothing similar to compare it to, but I'm sure others here can do that, especially those with similar set ups.

Another approach would be to get a couple of other local canvas shops to give you estimates.

In order for you to make valid comparisons, they should all have exposure to the same photos or dimensions and specifications, so that they'll be trying to "guestimate" the same job.

Canvas work is not cheap, and sometimes I'm a little shocked at the costs. A full cockpit enclosure for a CD-22 can cost as much as $3500 or so, if I remember correctly (!)

Joe,

I might give Franks Upholstery a call just to see what they say. I don't really know a lot about the costs of what they normally cost but if a full enclosure for a 22' Dory is 3500.00 then 1100.00-1300.00 for the bulkhead and sunbrella that extends over the decks sounds pretty reasonable. I will call Franks just to get an idea of his quote. Joe will be coming out to the house to take a closer look and a more accurate quote also.

I'm thinking depending on the cost of just the sunbrella, I might just go with the bulkhead instead of both. I'll know for sure on Saturday when he comes out. I'll definitely keep you posted.

Thanks again Joe,

Kevin :)

For me it depends what you're going to do with the boat and where you are. If I was in Florida I'd probably want a bimini. Up here in the NW it's just another encumbrance, in my opinion. We had one on our 22 footer and I don't think I ever opened it up. For us it was too restricting of the view, which is a significant part of the boating pleasure. The same goes for fishing. On the other hand, the drop down canvas on our 16 is a must as it facilitates our year-round boating. That said, the price you were quoted is low if it includes the drop down and the bimini..
Just my opinion.
