Outsmart sliding window ( overboard ) latch pop offs

While trying to slide temperamental starboard slider closed, handle almost came loose. With plenty of past experience with Murphy, I knew there was only 1 place it would end up. This has probably been addressed several times over the years on this site but thought I would lend my inexpensive fix to solve the inevitable sinking of same.
I drilled about a 1/8" dia. hole on the bottom narrow edge of latch.
Then inserted a brass & SS (fishing tackle) hook & swivel with a piece of fishing line about 18" long thru same then tied other end thru leading edge of sliding screen frame. Immediately after doing this I forced latch off of window to clean and apply rearview mirror glue to refasten. I clamped same and left overnite. Took a little ride the next day and as you might imagine it worked fine while opening. Hit a little spray so went to close and presto! popped right off. Little sucker headed right for Davy Jones but Murphy was outsmarted. This time at least. Unless I got a bad batch of glue this fix didn't work well. Any other ideas? Was thinking of 3M double sided tape or does anyone know what the manufacturer uses?
Thanks and hope my idea was useful as if you haven't yet, you almost certainly will.

I had the same issue but on my forward facing center window. I used a 3M product of double stick tape. It comes in a red roll and was purchased from Ace Hardware for around $8. I was told that this is their most strongest double side tape and can be used on exterior applications as well.

Applied it on the window piece and so far it has held up. I have only opened and closed it 4-5x so time will tell whether this is a permanent fix or not.

I wonder why these things weren't mechanically fastened in the first place. It seems like the handle could be bolted to the window if care was taken to prevent the bolt from directly contacting the window, i.e. with grommets and washers. The adhesive would still be the primary means of transferring pressure on the handle to the window, but the bolt would keep it from pulling away from the window and popping off.

I'd consider trying this but I'd be afraid of breaking the window and causing a way bigger problem!

I was told to add some adhesive silicone in the end of the handle, where the edge of glass hits, in addition to the tape.also recommend keeping the track well lubed with Teflon spray lube so you don't pull hard in the first place

I should add the Teflon spray lube. Some of my windows require some effort to slide.

I used Liquid Rollers on mine, which has been recommended here before, and it didn't really help. Maybe my tracks are too dirty for that to help.

Anybody know of a good source for this latch besides ordering from Diamond/Seaglaze in BC? The part price is reasonable but the shipping is horrendous.
