Outfitting a New To Me 16 Angler

Hi Folks,

I've enjoyed your site for years and have finally been able to purchase my 16 Angler.

My partner and I are just getting it set up for salmon now. Today we installed the downriggers and Wednesday we'll hit the water looking for Coho in the Straits.

I was hoping to get some ideas for rod storage on our little boat. The previous owner installed two L brackets under each gunnel. These work OK, however, the rod tips have to be carefully worked around the throttle and reels contact the control cables on the starboard side.

I would like something handy and secure for four rods when the boat is on the water but that won't add too much height when trailering.

If need be the rods can be taken out of the on water storage when the boat is being trailered.

Ideas and pictures would be welcomed.

Thanks

The C-Donk

I think four vertical pvc pipes (or rod holders) at the rear of the cockpit would work well. Just be sure to pull the rods and lay them down before trailering.

Sorry, no fancy solutions here either.

Enjoy the new boat.

Chris

Welcome to the fold!

Don't know how much extra height you can take, but a local fabricator should be able to whip up a simple rocket launcher for the cabin roof for not a whole lot of money. Look around the photo album here and you'll see all kinds of solutions for rod storage.

Have the Nerds set up a photo album for you so we can see your new baby.

My thoughts exactly.
Get a radar arch with rocket launchers on it!

Congrats on the new boat!

I'm guessing you are the very lucky guy who snagged this boat in Port Angeles, with a near new Canadian Yamaha F50 on it. No?

If you don't share the steal of a deal you made, I'll spill the beans...

My buddy and I over in Freshwater Bay, were talking about snagging this boat...even though we have one already. Assuming it's the same boat he saw, I'll suggest it's one of the best deals on a 16 Angler I've ever seen.

Congrats!

Yes, I do believe my partner and I got one heck of a deal. The Yamaha had less than 50 hrs on it, the EZ Loader was super clean and the boat is in great shape with just a few scuffs from crab pots.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Word searches haven't helped me so I'll hit the photo albums.

Pics of our new boat will come to the site eventually.

Thanks again!

I fish out of a 16' angler and have it set up for 4 rods. When I am in Canada, I will have two salmon rods and two bottom fishing rods. I assembled a support for two rod holders, table and assorted other gear out of aluminum unistrut. Unistrut is a channel that you slip a special threaded nut (highly recommend using the stainless nuts) into for attaching items. I just clamped it to the shelf on the transom and didn't have to drill any holes. The other two poles stand behind the cabin and are held in place with a rubber antenna clip at the top and a plastic cup at the bottom. I just re-joined this group and added photo's to my album if you are interested in pictures of the unistrut support. The two most usefull additions I have made to the boat were the table over the transom and the raised wood rack in the cuddy. The rack in the cuddy allows you to throw all the loose stuff under it and put fish boxes on top for easy loading and unloading. I also included a few pics of some fish I have boated. Good luck with your new boat!

You are welcome. Always glad to pass on an idea that works. Those fish are the biggest I have caught in the past 5 years and they show how capable the little C-Dory is as a fishing boat. I caught all those fish in the album with my brother on board who is 6'-4" and weighs about 280 and I'm 6'-2" myself although not near as heavy. He actually gaffed that halibut and hung on until I could dispatch it. I have had my boat for about 9 years and have put it in everything from a mud puddle to the open ocean off the northwest side of Vancouver Island and it hasn't let me down yet. It's not fast but it will get you home. If you have any questions about my "improvements", I am more than happy to share the details.

Good luck on those coho!

I set up my 16 Angler with 2 Scotty downriggers, 4 Du-bro swivel rod holders that can rotate and change angles easily (they fit over 3/4" rails I mounted on the gunnels, nylon bushings allow them to swivel.) Also have 6 vertical rod holders mounted on the STBRD side of the cockpit and fabricated an 8 rod rocket launcher that folds down ( the rear legs are Aircraft grade 1/4" quick release pins). There are photos in my Album. Hope this is helpfull. http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... _album.php

Thanks Noreaster!

Great photos and ideas.

Here are a few questions when you get the time:

1. What material is the fold rocket launcher assembly made from.

2. Where did you buy the components for it?

3. Who built it, a marine facility, welding shop. . . ?

4. Is the fold down capability worth the effort and if so when do you utilize it?

Thanks for your time.

I Fabricated the frame for the rod holders myself. I purchased the rod holders from cabelas. They are just called polished aluminum rod holders.
The frame itself is made from 3/4" stainless that I purchased from a marine canvass shop. I also bought some .125" stainless plate from a local fabrication shop which I cut to shape polished and welded to the frame. I had the canvass shop bend the frame for me.
I have four Fittings bolted through the gunnels to hold every thing to the boat. The rod ends and fittings I purchased online.
I garage my boat, so for me it was a neccesity. I fish on the Great lakes and carry as many as 14 rods. With 2 people we're allowed 6 in the water, so I had to figure out a way t get 8 up and out of the way. I don't carry the rods up on top while trailering or while underway, (unless the water is dead flat).I will get some more detailed photos into my album if you like, but won't be able to post them till early next week as I'm trailering the boat to get a new trailer made today. Hope this is helpful

Okay I am a little confused here. I recently took possession of a 16 Angler and want to install some dwonriggers and rod holders. the boat is cored and I would like to thru bolt the brackets. How do you get back there to install the nuts?

Turtleblues

My Angler is quite a bit older, but I think that area is the same, you mean up under the gunnel behind the foam floatation? In my boat the foam is two canted pieces under each side. You will have to remove those to get underneath the gunnel to put in your hardware. Mine look like they were originally glued up there but one of the previous owners took them out and made a mechanical system for holding them in place. Mine are actually out right now as I am reinstalling some rod holders properly.

Good Luck

Mine is a 2007. It looks like D-Dory cored a hole in it to run the controls for the engine. I didn't look cllose enough to see if it was in 2 pieces or if it was glued in. I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks
There are a lot of boats out there outfitted with downriggers and rod holders. It must be a job that can be done fairly easily.

Turtleblues,
It sounds like the 2007 is like our 2009. Our sides are filled with foam that is either sprayed or poured in. You can reach behind the fiberglass liner at the stern end and remove enough foam (in pieces) to install backing plates and/or hardware. When finished, you can either re-foam or slope the foam in the direction of the stern so it will not collect water.
