On the St. Lawrence River

Make sure you go to Alexandria Bay, NY and have a bite to eat at Cavallarios. It's at the end of the town dock-great beer and subs, but you can get other things there also. A nice place to stay is the Channelsyde Motel at Point Vivian-nice dock, nice people. Enjoy yourselves-it's a great area.

Thanks for the tip, Dick and Sharon, but we visited A-Bay last year and didn't find much there to our liking except for being able to purchase local River Rat cheddar cheese and Adrirondack sausage.

On the U.S. ide of the river, we enjoyed Clayton far more than A-Bay.

Of course, Boldt Castle is a must-see but as it has its own dock, one doesn't need to stay in A-Bay to visit the castle.

I agree that Clayton is a much nicer place to visit. I didn't think you were familiar with the river at all, but you obviously know it quite well!
Dick's sister lives in Cape Vincent and Dick's cousins have a "river house" at Point Vivian.

From a left coaster, up on the boarder. Curious what kind of border security (Customs checks, Boarder Patrol, etc) you see and have to deal with there.

We just completed the Rideau Canal loop a week ago. Down the St. Lawrence from our island off Chippewa Point, up the Ottawa river, the length of the Rideau to Kingston, back down the St. Lawrence to our island. We entered Canada at Brockville. All we had to do was call in from a phone at the dock, give the boat details, our names and birth dates, where we had come from, and how long we would stay, and that was that. We had our passports but they weren't necessary. We returned to the US at Hart Island (Boldt Castle) and that was just about as trivial. Lucked out with the weather and got just about the best ten days in what has been a pretty dismal summer.
