Doing the preventive maintenance today, and decided to order another bearing kit and the aluminum caps to replace the clear plastic caps that came with the trailer.

Out of curiosity, I asked the gent at customer service what they recommended as an oil change interval. He said as long as there was no water in the hub, don't mess with it. Interesting...

I am curious what the average interval is for the CBrats (i.e. are we compulsive?).
 
I don't have oil hubs, but I do my share of auto/mechanical work. That said, I don't see an issue w/ changing the 90w oil every couple of yrs if it's water free, minimum. I'd ask the manufacturer what their recomendation is. I'd take into account distances towed; more miles, more frequent changes. The bearings/hubs get hot. We all know that. And oil breaks down. That is common sense. IMO an ounce of prevention...
 
I have had boil bath hubs for the last six years and just changed oil this last May. The only reason I changed is because I did a complete overhaul on the brakes, bearings and seals. The old oil looked fine.

Most over the road Semi Tractors have oil bath hubs. If there is no water & no leaky seals every hundred thousand miles or so will be fine on the 80w90 in the hubs. :wink: Have a good one!!
 
I recently changed the oil in my hubs also. Did this as I changed from hydrualic surge brakes to electric brakes. The oil looked fine, however I'm not sure how many miles were on it before I purchased it in June. Also, while I haven't had the opportunity to check the hub temps since changing out the brakes, when the older surge brakes were not adjusted up (basically not working), the hubs ran very cool. I think temps were reading between 120-140 F on my temp gun, and any case I could touch the hubs with my bare hand. (IOW, the oil bath hubs seemed to run cooler than grease hubs on a different boat/trailer.) I do plan on changing the oil at least every few years, if not annually, as I inspect the brakes. Colby
