O Canada

Dusty, I had dinner with a couple BC fisheries people and they were talking about an inlet or sound near the North end of the Island on the west side. They said the road is not bad, their is a lodge and you can fish in protected waters, with some of the best BC salmon fishing and much lower numbers of boaters.
Any idea what they were talking about?

They could be talking about several places -- probably the most popular one with a decent road -- Quatsino Sound. It is getting too danged popular, but I hear it is still a great place. There is a Quatsino Resort, and you used to be able to rent a cottage and have the boat alongside the cottage. Rough living, eh? Or just drive up, stay in the resort, and charter...

Fishing, like all of the Vancouver Island west coast, can be spotty. When it's hot, it's really hot. Some huge salmon are caught there. Much preferred to the Tofino/Ucleulet/Bamfield area... but that's just my personal feeling. Nice thing about Quatsino -- you can fish in nice quiet water or go out and play with the big guys.

Go!

Dusty

Jay,
I think the trip you two did on the Yukon was great! I checked it out when you first posted it. I may go up that way one day. Not many would take the boat up river after being advised otherwise.
Did you ever read "Bear Man of Admiralty Island"?

C-Brats,

For those thinking about spending some time around Port Alberni, Ucluelet, Tofino, Barkley Sound, etc., the Port Boat House in Port Alberni is a C-Dory dealer. They love the C-Brats and for those wanting to leave their truck and trailer there, they will store your truck and trailer at no cost in a secure fenced area. They will even attempt to hold some moorage for you if you give them a heads up as to when you are coming.
You can make arrangements by either emailing Steve at Steve@portboathouse.com or phone Steve at 250 724-5754.
They are a friendly bunch.

Harvey,

Its the MV LADY Rose that you were thinking of. I believe they may be taking her out of service but the MV Frances Barkley in still running I think.

Dusty,

Thanks for the tip on the "around the south end route" I have thought about that but don't think I would do it on my own. I like the idea and think there are several good reasons to go that way, however, I am not opposed to doing the ferry trip and launching at Port Alberni. My personal favorite would be to go by water, but after the PLI trip and that big wave water there, I'd be thinking more of doing that when a schedule meant "what are the tides doing?"

I have always thought Dusty's way around the southern end of the Island would be great, we can get to Victoria from Bellingham in what, four hours? But we are not likely to do it this year. If you had asked me before last September where we were going for our "big" cruise in the summer of 2009, I would have probably said the Broken Islands. But having been "Powelled" last fall, we are heading back there again this year...so many places, so little time, but the allure of that SW sunshine and warmth is irresistable!

Harvey,

Understand your reasons -- we've BTDT soo many times, and getting there is at least 1/2 the fun. Port Renfrew, north of Sooke, is one of my favorite locations for fishing. Easy run to Swiftsure, but there are also some close sandy areas where big flatties hang out. It has been too long since I've been to Renfrew, dang it. Think I may just PA to Vic ferry and drive out there for a charter.

Other than Port Renfrew there are very few places to hide if the weather gets nasty, and we have been trapped a couple of times. Never dangerous, but uncomfortable. With all the weather buoys and sat. information available now, weather predictions have become a lot more accurate. And of course you are right -- always have a buddy boat along if possible.

Dusty

I won't be able to be at FH or Anacortes. I would like to go North later if anyone is looking for a possable buddy boat. June, July or Aug. will now be a possability. If someone is interested lets PM.

JT,

Thanks for the compliment and I think most who were interested in this type of cruising have already read my acount and viewed the video's too. Posted the links mainly for some of the new member's who might not of and with the Canadian to US dollar the way it is who might be interested now in a remote road trip and cruising in this beautiful area. Sure would have appreciated it if We could have watched some video and read of others cruising in that area before we did.

If you ever do make it to that area your boat should really be ideal for the Yukon River and lakes. Also there is some fine fishing between Skagway and Haines, Alaska.

Still haven't read the "Bear Man of Admiralty Island", but it's definately on my future reading list.

We are going up to Ucluelet to cruise and fish the Broken Island Group and will be there (Island West Marina and RV resort) between June 2 - 25 and then to the Broughtons, basing at a spot near Telegraph Cove (Alder Bay Marina and RV resort) between June 27 and July 13.
We then are going down to Browns Bay Marina just north of Campbell River near Ripple Rock. July 13 - 27, and will be at the Pedder Bay Marina near Victoria July 27 - Aug 17.
Any C-Brats in the area, give us a shout on VHF or stop by and visit.

One more piece of information - the road to Ucluelet is fully paved and a good ride. It's just not necessary to park in Port Alberni, or drive the logging roads to Bamfield to cruise and fish the Barcley Spound and Broken Island Group. With your boat on a trailer it's easy to fish the area from both Ucluelet and Tofino while on that side.

This is a nice update and good to know. Several years ago that was not the case, and the trip out on the Alberni Inlet was a beautiful cruise.
