Well, the count after 3 days and two nights is 15 squirrels transported, two raccoons transported and three grackels caught and released.

Actually could have been more but I took a neighbor out on CAPTAINS CAT this afternoon (didn't set the trap) and actually caught a fish! One pretty good sized Croaker which now resides in our freezer. Also got boarded by the Maryland Police and the USCG. Passed with flying colors except I couldn't find my paper registration card for which I got a warning. Gotta send for another one I guess.

My guess is that we'll catch Rocky III tonite. The trap has two shrimp in it. Yum!

Charlie, skunks are really no problem. All you've got to do is grab 'em by the tail and hold them in the air. They cannot spray when held that way. I was witness to it myself....now the rest of the story....

In 1960, I was working on a ranch outside of Wisdom, Montana putting up hay. As we were getting ready to shut down for lunch, the owner's son saw a skunk run under a stack of fencing panels. He slipped over there and managed to grab the skunk by the tail and the next thing we knew, he was standing in the middle of the hay field holding this skunk in the air by the tail. After a lot of persuasion, he conned another ranchhand into holding a gunney sack open so he could drop the skunk into it. Meanwhile the rest of us were watching from a fair distance away as the skunk was dropped into the bag. Needless to say the skunk, did manage to spray after the "drop". Those two guys rode up to the ranch house on the back of a trailer pulled by a tractor. When lunch was served we sat at the long table in the house eating, while those two clowns sat outside and we passed food through an open window so they could eat.

So Charlie, when you catch a skunk grab 'em by the tail and let us know how it works out for you.... :wink

The feeder is about 7' high and the white covering is a teflon material that they (squirrels) cannot climb. Somehow the raccoons can though.

Charlie-Wrap that pole with fly paper. (You remember fly paper). That raccoon will move over to your neighbor's yard.

No coons last night, there may have been only two in our neighborhood and they have gone bye bye...

Only if it was properly "descented", seasoned and properly smoked into jerky. You do have a smoker don't you Charlie?

Yes, I do as a matter of fact. How do you suppose I could lure one in there to be smoked? But I forgot, I quit smoking a long time ago, probably would have trouble lighting one anyway.

Have only caught two squirrels today, the herd is thinning out... The two I caught must have been the stupidist ones in the bunch. No sunflower seeds in there for bait, just an open/set trap. Maybe they went in there out of curiosity? Or maybe they had been in love with a previously trapped squirrel and a scent was left behind. :?: I'm up to 18 or so and see another one coming across the lawn as I type this... :cry

Quick question: Do you have a "holding tank" for those critters? Or do you transport them one (occasionally two) at a time?

Oh, I'm not worried about them being extinct or anything I'm taking them to a place called "Squirrel Hollow"about three miles away. It used to be just called "The Hollow" but for some reason has been renamed.

BTW, I've asked the fish/game folks (anonomously of course) if I can do what I'm doing without running afoul of the squirrel/raccoon police. Don't expect a response until they come back from their weekend hunt!

Charlie, as squirrely as things are around your place, I'm thinking that you'd best get down to your C-Dory and make sure your little fluffy tailed buddies aren't knawing on your electrical wiring :disgust in retaliation for your trapping and relocating of their loved ones. After all they can be quite vindictive.

Actually, we are a "Certified Wildlife Habitat" and have the signs from the National Wildlife Federation to prove it! :thup Haven't put them up yet so I don't know how all these critters know about it. It's fairly easy to get certified, a long questionaire to fill out about your land and environment and then you send them some $ (naturally) and get the signs. We do like our critters, have wild turkeys, a couple of fox (who apparently have sworn off squirrels as food), a couple of deer and so many kinds of birds, I had to start writing them down....

Just watched 5 wild ducks (one girl and 4 male mallards) land, come up to the house, walk around eating sunflower seeds and drinking from a little pool. Now they're down on the point, sleeping while one walks sentry duty. Pretty neat.

I will watch the critters and the boat wiring Dave, mousies got into our trailer wiring once and it was a real mess.... One of them crawled into our A/C control box and fried himself and a relay too.... :smilep

Sun going down here on the Right coast, the creek is calm, reflections abound. Life is good! :wink:

This has been a fun thread, will keep it up as long as I catch a squirrel each day! They're bound to run out eventually... (or not...)

I actually spend time on the boat too! Went out yesterday, caught a croaker (they really do croak) and today with some friends to investigate a creek to the west of us. A great trip... Trapping is just a sideline with me....

In my youth i was a bit antsy: anyway at 16 i had 40 bucks in my pocket and rode the dog to Alberta "ya-hoo" going to ride a horse and drive a combine, well i hung around the street think it was Loldyminister picked up a job and the first month went well milked a few cows etc. well the second month started off with putting this fence up (posts were in) it was a wire mesh type about six feet high they than herded five or six sows in this area with god knows how many little ones ... well we no sooner had the gate closed and those little buggers were out and all over the place ... i guess i had the large mesh on the bottom and the small squares on the top ... that evening i was at the bus stop and caught the dog to the next town .. also got another job on a farm "hey i had experience now" and drove a combine but no horse .. wc

I was 16 in 1960, but I had a pretty good deal. I got room and board for me AND my horse plus some money. Since the only gathering places in town was the two bars, we'd all go into town on Saturday night and watch the fights. (yes, they let families in the bars then so in I went....no where else to go).

Well, we got no horses here, at least not eating from my feeders... Did catch Rocky III last night. Score now stands at 18 Squirrels and 3 Raccoons.... Have not reset the trap this morning, only 2 Squirrels on the ground though right now, a lot better than the usual 10-12!

Gramma Camp next week. I'll have 8, 10 and 12 year old GKs helping me! They're going to take a riding lesson on Monday afternoon and don't know it yet!
