New Trailer

Marty ..what you said is what i do normally except this time i was just seeing where/how the boat sat on the trailer so i could either move the winch post forward or aft. I will see about adjusting the trailer bunks. Thanks Tug

I was out looking at the trailer and thought i would measure its length....the length is 25 ' 9 ".... The trailer i thought i ordered was 23' 6" including the tongue extension. I also did a google search search for Fulton F2 winches on new EZ-LOADER Trailers , i could not find any. I think they just sent me a trailer that they had or that someone didn't want.

Trailer Pros Excellent trailer boat guides

Trailer Cons wrong suspension system
wrong trailer length
wrong winch system
waited over 2 months to get a trailer that i didn't order

I have only payed the deposit so far...the question is do i have to take the trailer or can i simply say ..its not what i ordered and i do not want it. Tug

Tug,
It all depends on how badly you NEED a new trailer. If your old one will work for now tell them to take it back and refund your money.
I purchased a Road Runner trailer for my 22' Angler and it was a good tough rig. It cost approx. 65% of an Easy Loader and a better trailer. They are made in Vancouver, BC. but I bought it in Alaska.
Good luck.

Looks to me like you need a set of bow boards . Two more bunks that are inside the main ones and go forward to keep the boat centered and off the frame of the trailer .May need another cross member to support the front brackets for those bunks . It also appears that you have drum brakes on only one axle.In many states here [good ol' USA]you are required to have brakes on all axles with a gross weight of over 3k . I would specify discs . Give them a chance to make it right . I know its frustrating but ask them to call the west coast EZ Loader factory and get the correct specs for the C Dory 22 . They have made a zillion of them.

Agree with Marc--you need more bunk support forward. Spray the trailer bunks with "Liquid rollers" or any good "dry" silicone spray, to make moving the boat on the bunks easier.

You don't want a 23' trailer--it will not give enough support for the C Dory 22.

I agree, that is a strange looking winch--I like to see and lube the gears--not sure you can do that. Also most of us like to independently adjust the bow roller/"Y" from the winch to give best support.

Second the disc brakes. Florida and at least 10 other states require brakes on all axels. I believe Canada also does. What brakes did you order? Kodiak is better than Tie Down for brakes.

After our discussions--not sure that torsion axels are that much better than spring...possible not as good weight distribution, detiorration of the rubber insert for the "Torsion".

I agree about the torsion/springs support, the only reason that i ordered them is that some-one posted that torsion axiles will lower the boat on the trailer.I can live with the springs and the length but that winch has to go,what if i wanted to change to another winch or even put an electric winch on the trailer ..the way the winch post is configured it would be impossible, i would have to replace it with a traditional winch/post/setup....I not sure if i have disc or drum brakes on the trailer,i don't have the invoice yet, the only option the dealer gave me was electric or surge brakes. Can you tell which type i have from this pictures.

I was just thinking on adding a keel roller to the trailer,it simple and it works.I am not sure that this dealer would have a clue as to how to put on additional support bunks. Tug

Well, we're spending the weekend at our daughter's (Laura, to give her a name,) in Olympia. So there's a not a lot to do until we get back on the water tomorrow.

So, Tug, my trailer winch cable goes under the bow so that I get a more direct shot at pulling the boat up all the way to the bow roller. Since yours goes over the bow roller there's a more acute angle to pull on the boat bow. You might check that before you change the winch. I imagine they just threw on a new case, the internals are the same.

The suggestion of using silicone spray on the bunks is a good one, as 90% of your effort is against friction. 100% once you're on level ground, or the winch is too high.

Why not let the dealer adjust the trailer to the boat? He should have much more experience at that job.

And there's nothing wrong with springs. Easier to fix if there's ever a problem. And metal lasts longer then rubber. Plus there's more built in damping. The good part about torsion rubber is that it lowers the trailer, and that's important for a 25. Not sure it's that important on a 22.

You have drum brakes--surge-=not electric--and you don't want pad type electric (like in house trailer). Bunk boards forward will give far better support than a single roller. There is a lot of boat not supported forward in your trailer from the photos--and the boat is not all of the way forward there.

Yes, you should be able to change out the winch--I would not go electric on a C Dory22--too complicate--and the two speed is plenty of winch.

Harvey...i measured the trailer and the way it is set up now is that the boat hangs about 14 inches past the bunk. There is plenty of room to move the winch post forward like you suggested, i will do that tomorrow. Can't wait to see what my boat will look like sitting on my new trailer. I will post a picture. Tug

Tug,
The transom over the bunks is only part of the equation. You also want to be sure that your tongue weight is about 10% of your total load weight. (I have recently seen from 5 to 15 % so..... I'd stick with 10% with the "usual boat load" on board. That will make for a trailer that follows straight instead of wandering all over, (swaying).

I agree, a 23 foot trailer is going to be way short. I'd sure give your dealer a chance to make things right, but if he can't, I'd want my money back. Give him a check list and work with him on a deadline. Like 2 weeks is long enough to manufacture a whole new and correct rig.

I was at the dealers at 8:00 AM this morning waiting for the boss to arrive.ha!ha! I told him that i could live with the trailers' length and spring suspension but the winch and winch stand had to go, which was fine with him. He understood that i wanted the standard winch and winch post setup. He had never seen a Fulton F2 winch before either and understood my concerns. He said he would call the salesrep and have him ship the standard winch and stand and return the one that was on my trailer. He said it should be here in a few days.( heard that somewhere before???) He also ordered the bow keel roller that i picked out of the book for me.I think the bow keel roller will work good..( thats what i have on my other trailer )..there is really not alot of weight on the roller itself. The bunks take up most of the boats weight and the keel roller acts more as a guide to centre the boat than anything else. There was frost on the boats windows yesterday morning so i hope i get this trailer fixed before the snow comes. Tug

Went down to the marina this morning and loaded the boat on the trailer and made some trailer adjustments, winch stand/trailer bunk loading guides. Here are some pictures that i took:

I brought the bunk boat guides in towards the boats hull as snug as i could. The trailer Bunk Boat Guides need to be raised about four inches, if i put the bunks guides on top of the trailer frame they will come in contact with the bottom of the boat.I could raise the boat bunks but would prefer to lower the bunks rather than raise them.Any other options. The keel roller did the trick. the boat loaded much easier. I moved the winch post forward and now the aft bunks are almost flush with the back the the transom. The trailer and boat are almost level, i need to raise the tounge up an inch or so. Tug
