Hi,
Sitting in Australia trying to find a boat that is a good river cruiser, is able to handle a little bit of ocean work, can comfortably sleep a couple and is relatively light to tow. Nothing down here like the C Dory 22, which is a pity. (We are looking to replace a 24ft trailer-sailer with something that is powered and a bit more comfortable for short-term (from a couple of days out to 3 or 4 weeks) cruising for a couple that is in denial about aging.)

Anyway, found the C-Brats and am knocked out by the great information etc, as well as the camaraderie. Well done!!!

Our other "project" which is in play and is starting to get organized is to have a look at the Rideau Canal/Ottawa/Montreal in the summer of 2018. Problem we are having is identifying any cruisers (like the CD 22 or 25) that might be available for hire for such a trip (which we envisage will be a reasonably leisurely 3 weeks on the water with a few days in Ottawa and Montreal. Seems to be lots of larger houseboats available, which would be overkill for a just a couple.

So, if any of the C Brats knows of anything like a C22 or 25 which might be available for hire up in that area, a point in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Any pointers to any other possibilities for hiring a small sleep-aboard cruiser with a basic head, would also be great.

Our boat buying plans are now starting to mutate a little and we are starting to think that we might be better off to have a look at a C-Dory 22 in your part of the world when we are there next summer (probably in June), and if it as good as it seems to be, buy one and ship it back to Oz. (I noticed one made it into a shipping container and ended up in New Zealand a couple of years back).

Any way, all the best from down-under; any hints would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Bob & Olga Milne

Welcome aboard! Boats this size can definitely be shipped. In addition to the NZ boat you've found, an Aussie member of another boat club I used to belong to had a 20 footer boxed up and shipped down from Seattle. (If you ever see theBarbara Jaround the local marinas, it too was originally built in Washington State, not far from the C-dory factory but almost 60 years earlier).

Bob & Olga, Welcome to the C-BRATS from the Pacific Northwest. This site is a great place to learn and share everything C-Dory, and to meet great folks who love their boats.

Not sure how long you have been peeking around here on the site so incase you missed it, back in late 2015, a fellow Aussie connected here, looking for a C-Dory 25 to do the Great Loop. He did manage to "hire" a 25 for 6 months to accomplish his goal. Here is a link to his original thread, "I Need a C Dory for the Great Loop".

That will give you a place to start. I know he posted occasionally during the trip. He also posted a blog but I have no idea how to find that. The folks who own the C-Dory 25 that he rented are on the site here occasionally, and the experience was positive from their viewpoint.

Most folks here love their C-Dorys and getting them to rent one out is like getting them to rent out their child or their a family pet so it might take some searching to find that special connection.

Wish you the best in your search. Hopefully, someone with a better memory than mine will be able to get the links to some of the other posts Derrick did. As you know already, this is a pretty great place.

Enjoy.

There was one sailor who wanted a C-Dory for the summer, so just bought one and resold it at the end of the year. This site can claim some credit. We provide an 'efficient market' in economist talk. Our boats when priced right usually sell in a matter of weeks. Overpriced boats will go months without selling.

Avoiding sales tax would in the US would be the main problem, but a tax expert could help you here, and it might be really easy if you were exporting it to Australia. (Mr Trump would approve LOL)

OK, now I found more info on Derrick Bann and his Loop trip and book.

“America’a Great Loop, Aussi Style now #1 loopers book” is here

and

“Two Aussies doing Loop in C-Dory” is here

Here is a link to what I think is their blog.

Have to look a bit down the page, but there are notes there about his book and some screen shots from the C-BRATS web site even.

Not sure if that will help you out but maybe. Hope so.

Thanks Guy's,
Much appreciated. Lots to follow up & read.

We have found a cruiser to rent. Based in Merrickville on the Rideau Canal (Aylings Boatyard) Cost for a 27Ft cruiser is (CAD)$1,185 per week which does not seem to bad (at least against costs in Oz.)

Have made a booking for the last three weeks in June (2018).

When we get a bit closer, will harass the Brats to see if someone in that part of the world might have a C Dory 22 and be good enough to let us have a look at it.

If its as good as you all say it is - next job for us will be to buy one and send it down-under.

Once again - many thanks and keep on boating!!!

Great, glad you made that connection. Once you get closer, check the area on the Brat Map, or on the schedule for the CBGT's. Most everyone is pretty proud of their boats and usually glad to show.

Enjoy the next part, planning and packing.
