We are, I think, as I type setting a new record. At 82 online.

Quickly followed at 86. 27 members, 5 hidden and 56 guests.

And ten minutes later 90.

Will we make 100??

..and then the software dorks out.

About 75% of the guests have the same IP address. The software ins't the only thing dorking out.

I decided to reveal who it is that has logged on as Guest so many times:

[ crawl-66-249-66-74.googlebot.com ]

Sure takes the shine off our apparent popularity.

I wonder how many boats the Google guys are going to buy? They can sure afford 'em.

That's interesting. Any idea if it was intentional or a hiccup in the ethers.

Dunno. I gave Bill a call but he refuses to answer his phone.

Maybe he's googling

made it to 97 at 7:47
mr. google must be busy

Seems to be quite a few messages and various guests signed on currently (8:40am PST) at 5-6pm tonight (Nov 3). Hmmm, something's fishy about log on times....server problems??

Hey, man...gimme a break. Just got up, and it's hard to hear a phone on vibrate sitting across the house.

Nothing can be done about the Googlebot, but it's nothing to worry about - and in fact, is good news.

It's just Google servers crawling the site, adding our content to their index. It's not unusual to see 15-20 of them at a time, but I guess they've made some changes and are hitting us with more requests when they do the indexing.

As long as it's not hurting site performance, nothing to be concerned about...and we should be able to handle hundreds of simultaneous users, Google or otherwise.

OK...now that the caffeine has kicked in...

Dora~Jean noticed the key to the problem...something happened on the server in the last 10-12 hours, probably time-related. Most of the folks showing as "online" have time stamps for their activity that are in the future...if the server time was set incorrectly, this would cause the time stamps stored in the forum database to be bogus during that period. I don't have any control over the server time - that's something the hosting provider handles.

So, my guess is, the "who's online code" pulls entries from the database for everyone who's last visit is "greater than x minutes ago"...and anyone who visited during the period where the server time was set incorrectly is showing up.

It should fix itself...the server time is correct as of now. Once the server time gets beyond the bogus time stamps - probably around 7:30PM PST tonight - the "who's online" code will return accurate results.

The "most ever online" data will need to be reset manually, though...I'll look back through the forum posts on that subject, and set it to something closer to the truth.

Is anyone besides me getting this when trying to view posts since last visit?

"You cannot make another search so soon after your last; please try again in a short while."

If it's just me, then my feelings are hurt. If it is everyone, I am very sorry.

Yep, got the same message when I selected "View posts since last visit". Tried again seconds later and it worked.

Mike-

I get the same response, and have been for several days, maybe weeks. Thought it was caused by "double clicking', which is my bad habit. Always works right when I slow down and click just once. Joe.

Seen the message a couple times before, after refreshing the page.

Joe, what took you so long, figured I'd see you befoe noon.

Well I get the stupid message everytime all day. Sometimes I miss the simplicity. But it is cool seeing my dad in the online list for so long. He hasn't stayed on the computer for more than ten minutes at a time in his entire 82 year life.

With the last upgrade (many weeks ago), a new setting was put in place that limits how often a search can be done. This is done to prevent actions on behalf of Internet troublemakers...it's easy to bring a server to its knees by crafting scripts that perform frequent complex queries. By limiting how often a query can be made by any unique user, this puts a speed bump in front of the ner-do-wells.

The error message is a little misleading...because it's not always the result of using the search function. However, the site interprets many requests as a search, including the "view posts since last visit" link.

The error should rarely be seen by "regular" users, as the time period required between "searches" is pretty short - currently, it's configured for 5 seconds. This is long enough to foil automated attacks, but short enough not to cause too much inconvenience to legitimate users.

As with any setting of this nature, it's a balancing act...we can shorten the time period if it's causing problems. I've hit it 4-5 times in the last few weeks, and I'm on the site a lot. When I did encounter it, I just waited a few seconds and tried again.

You must be one of those twitchy mouse guys...slow down, smell the roses, and enjoy your stay. :P

I just reduced the "time between searches" interval from 5 to 3 seconds...lemme know if it's any better.

Roger-

Cleaning up the house after having tile installed in the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, hall, etc.

Have to do SOME chores to keep the wife happy so I can post all day!

See ya' in Seattle!

Joe

Nope, but nice try Bill. You got me on some kind of quota or something?? I have seen that message maybe a half dozen times in three years until this morning. About the same time the online numbers started creeping up I started getting the message every time I use either of the new post review functions or the search feature. I can make new albums, delete B~C's posts, kick people out, edit Joe's jokes, moderate the forums, use the Admin panel, and all that other good stuff. But I can't get a simple list of what folks posted in the past however many hours. That Googlebot can kiss my butt.

You still sticking with the future-user story and expect it all to straighten out this evening? I can wait for that.

Got plenty to do anyhow - like go to a school assembly at 2:30 to see Tiffany get her Student-of-the-Month award, which is this month based on Leadership qualities. Then Jamie and I have to go into town to pick up Sophie who had a couple little operations today. Good Tiff, poor doggy.

You can come by and clean our house-- haven't had a kitchen for two months now. Cabinets are in, hope to have the granite installed on the counters soon, then the flooring and appliances.

I told PJ that I was not going to do any more cooking-- hell, I'd be afraid to get the kitchen dirty after all this- she'd probably shoot me.

I know how Joel feels-- whack, whack
