We just purchased our new CD22 Cruiser. We were lucky enough to be able to get this year's Seattle Boat Show display model and will take delivery after the Boat Show is over. We can hardly wait. :D

A little about us..... We purchased property on Center Island in the San Juans a few years ago and are slowly building a house. We had bought an old 1974 Fiberform IO to haul materials across Rosario- strong hull, good engine, bad parts and pieces around the engine. The boat finally bit the dust (water) last month and we started looking around for a replacement.

The C-Dory had always been on our list of future possibilities, we just didn't know it would be this soon. In looking around the Internet I came across C-Brats. You guys are really amazing. I never imagined a boat could have such a strong, dedicated following. After looking at the usual suspects we decided the C-Dory was the boat for us.

Jeff Messmer tells us there is a gathering at the factory on 1/14/05. Maybe we will get a chance to meet some of you or maybe at the Boat Show. We plan to use the time at the Boat Show looking for a VHF Radio, Depth/Fish Finder, Coast Guard Kit, anchor and bumpers. We didn't keep much off our Fiberform. Any thoughts and ideas about those things we need to buy would be appreciated.

I may be wrong, but I believe the dealers usually provide a Coast Guard Kit at the time of sale. I don't know if this is due to a state or federal law, common courtesy, or liability consideration. I'd check with the dealer. Maybe if it is a minimal kit you could upgrade it with them at a lower cost than buying the better gear outright, or simply buy any additional equipment to supplement the kit. HTH. Joe
 
Welcome! To avoid confusion, I think the shindig at the factory is on Saturday the 15th, not Friday the 14th. Here is a cut and paste from page 10 of the SBS / CBC thread:

Saturday the Factory is planning on starting the party at 7:00 pm and lasting till app.9:30 pm
appetizers from 7:00 till 7:30
Dinner from 7:30 to 8:30
Factory tours from 8:30 till 9:30

If it is in fact on the 14th, a WHOLE lot of people are going to be disappointed!

I live on Guemes Is. Kate and I will be with the group on Fri and Sat. Looking forward to meeting you both. Congratulations on your new boat. Looking forward to seeing it at the show.

How many homes are on Center Is? Will have to buzz over there and check it out in the next week or two. Got to love the C-Dory, rain or shine, Snow or sleet. Warm and toasty inside.

Congrats on the new boat - maybe someday the Sea Brats can crash your house warming on the island!? :P As regards things to buy for the new boat, you might want to review recent posts to the Forums:All C-Dorys, All The Time:"Is the 22' right for me?" thread. A lot of people chimed in on how to best equip the CD 22. I wrote a little about misc. stuff to purchase.

In general, I'd avoid the typical Coast Guard kit and put one together myself. The normal kit often supplied by dealers has 4 Mae West style TypeII life jackets that invariably wind up stored in the garage after you purchase lifejackets that you and or others are actually willing to use (typically vest style Type II's). You might also want one or two child size vests/jackets in the repetoire if you have kids/grandkids/friends with little ones. The typical Coast Guard kit contains adult vests only.

I'd buy 6 fenders - 2 larger ones that get tied off on or near the cleats on either side near the bow and 4 smaller ones - 2 for the stern and 2 to put out at the front end of the cockpit. I'd also get 2 25' foot 3/8" lines with loops to put on the stern cleats and 1 50' 3/8" line to attach to the bow cleat. Rig the latter so that 25' can run down each side and terminate hanging into the cockpit. If the lines attached the cleats at the stern are also routed so they hang into the cockpit near the steps, then you can dock to either side and easily tie up by hopping out with both a bow and stern line in hand.

I'd also recommend both a fixed mount VHF and a hand-held VHF. I don't have enough experience to recommend one brand over the others, but I have a Ray Marine 53 for the fixed mount and a Horizon for the handheld. Both have served me well. On my boat the VHF antenna was mounted on the side just outside the window from the helm with a mount that allows it to be folded down. I wouldn't recommend this mounting location - mount either on the roof in the corner over the helm or on a radar arch. The extra few feet of height can make a big difference in overall transmission/reception distance.

For GPS - I really like Garmin's with the color display and blue chart map chip. I have the Garmin 182C. I also have a hand-held back-up - Garmin GSP 76S. The menus and use are very similar between the two so it's easy to switch back and forth between them. If I every really need to rely on the back-up GPS, it will undoubtedly be in adverse conditions and not having to think about how to operate it is important to me.

I'd also recommend that you have second bilge pump installed in the depression under the motor-well. A back-up for this is a good thing and if you really NEED the bilge pump, having the extra pumping capacity will be helpful.

For a fish finder, I bought an Interphase with forward scanning capability. I wouldn't recommend this - it was overly expensive at the time (about $1k) and doesn't seem to offer the resolution of other less expensive units. Mine also throws static that I pick up on both my fixed mount and handheld radios...I haven't been able to isolate the problem. People I know seem very happy with units from Lowrance.

Finally, before you buy any of that stuff (and have mounting holes drilled), I'd recommend that you hook-up with a few C-Brats to look at their boats and see how/where their stuff was installed. I wish I had done that prior to ordering and paying for installation on my stuff. If you want to stop by my place some time to see my boat, send me a PM.

Welcome! We are also on Center Island - lot 2 North end. We chose the raymarine system with gps and overlapping radar - it is great. Crossing Rosario in the fog is no trouble at all! Hope to see you at the factory this week end or in the Islands!

Roger, some good thoughts. For some reason I never gave a thought to using one 50 ft line centered on the forward cleat.

What thoughts have you had about your anchor system. Windlass, 200-300 ft of rode and a good anchor is a good way to spend another chunk of change. "Kaching".

I saw the 50' line centered on the bow cleat on somebody else's boat... Just an example of the "little things" you learn from seeing how other people do it.... As for an anchor "system" - my boy sometimes does the job. Other than that it's me pulling on the line. I don't really anchor all that often so it hasn't been an issue for me. I do however (of course) have a back-up anchor on board should I need it. Redundancy is my friend. Did I mention redundancy is my friend? :)

Thanks for the good information so far, especially the correction on the date of the factory party and the advise about waiting to look at other C-Dorys before I attack or let someone else attack my boat with a drill.

We're Lot #8 on the north side of Center Island. Either tie off or raft on the mooring buoy right off the point or let me know and I can call Steve tell him you can tie off at one of the community docks on the east side of the island.

Mary and I are looking forward to putting faces to names at the factory party on 1/15. :D
