New Guy Old Questions

Been reading chatter. Been at dealership late at night looking thru chain link. Think 19 ft. Angler is the one. Left number with dealer to call when 19 ft. arrives. Let them know I am hoping for a ride on any CD to get idea how they work. Have 22 ft. Carolina Skiff, 03 70 hp. Suzi. Got crap scared out of me in freak 8 ft. seas last winter. Run Florida gulf coast out of Homosassa. Lots of shallow river, 2 ft. seat pucker out to channels. Fish out to 20 miles off shore. Like to ride nearshore 30 miles up and down coast. Want to use Suzi on new boat. Usually load boat light. Run allot at night. How do CDs do in chop, 2 ft. and up to 5 ft. seas? What speed could I expect to make in a 2 ft. sea and keep wife comfortable? Should I expect to install trim tabs? Have crab traps everywhere, how is the visibility out front? Will 03 Chevy S-10 with 4.3 V6 be suitable tow vehicle? Usually 5 to occasional 100 mile tow trips? Are there any drawbacks considering the use info I gave? Would anyone do anything different than their CD?

For a second I thought you were asking my opinion! I'll add what I can.

The visibility is great on all these boats.

Get the trim tabs. They work great and will make a real difference on a long transit out and back. No matter how many crab pots on one side you'll be able to level the boat when you drive.

Consider getting a new Suzuki engine (purchased with the boat). Your other boat will be MUCH easier to sell if it has power, and Suzuki has several deals including a free 6yr warranty (standard is 3yr) or rebate for orders coming in Jan- Mar05. Talk to the dealer. Since you're getting the engine, consider the 90hp. Haven't heard any complaints about the 70hp, but it really flies we the 90 we have on ours.

Don't know the S-10 numbers, but the boat is light for its size and doubt there would be a problem.

Would never hazard a guess at speed vs somebody's comfort in any chop, but the C-Dory has lots of pitch authority and you can engine trim the nose right into the chop and eliminate most- if not all -pounding (if you're willing to ease up on the throttle). Can vouch for 2ft seas, but haven't seen 5ft yet (because of weather- not caution).

Best of luck!
John

Resident experts on CD19s are Robbi Krumm on C-Run (has one) and Bill, the Head Nerd (DaNag) who used to have one but went to a CD22 last year. Also Joe and Ruth on R-Matey, who previously had a CD22 but now have a CD19. We have a CD22 Cruiser because, well, we are mainly cruisers. I don't relate well to a short cabin, fewer creature comforts and no aft bulkhead. It is of course colder here is Washington State than in Florida! Others will have to tell you about the characteristics of the boat.

Frank, I am not an expert by far, but I am a lover of my 19. I agree with John in all respects. I also have the 90 Suzuki. I was going to buy the 70, but my "12 cylinder, turbo charged, Quicksilver,go faster husband, said "I will pay the difference if you get the 90". Got the 90, and I am so glad I did. Not for any added speed as you don't gain much, but for the power and being able to run at lower RPMs. Get the trim tabs. I don't use them very much, but when conditions warrant, they are needed. I would talk to the factory about mounting both motor and trim tabs, as they probably have more experience with the 19 than your dealer. Also, I would get the center opening window. Nice for here, needed in Florida.

The only conditions where I have to really sloooow down is in mixed chop of 3 to 4 feet that we commonly get in Puget Sound on big tides that mix with opposing winds at headlands. Other wise, it will handle most of the conditions that you speak of.

As for towing with the S-10, I see no problem. I do my main towing with a 6.5 liter diesel and hardly know it's back there. But, I do launch and retrieve and do some short trips to the gas station towing with a 190hp 2.7 liter Passat. I don't dare show my face with that "rig" (ha!) at any gathering. I fear the ribbing that I would get from the "Ram Guys". Not to mention the Volkswagan dealership. When the warrenty is off, then they will probably think it's cool.

Good luck in your quest. Robbi

TO John, Pat and Roberta,

Thank you for replying so fast. Your suggestions are exactly the sort of input I need. I especially liked the recommendation of getting a new 90 hp Suzi. I made sure my wife saw that! To go with the new motor will set my time frame back but as you say, probly worth the wait. I really need to get this right the first time. Does anyone know of any used 19 footers for sale? Still waiting for a ride. If I can be of any help to anyone coming to the Homosassa, FL area, let me know. Thanks again.

Frank
