New Direct Injected 2-stroke Tohatsu

I mentioned this is the Honda thread I started but thought it warranted it's own discussion. I have a 2002 Honda 90hp with about 800 hrs on it, currently in the shop as it has water in the foot. Hopefully we'll get many years out of it but I was just doing a cursory glance at new engines and came across this Tohatsu 90hp direct injected 2-stroke, it only weighs 337lbs, with is a little lighter than the Suzuki, and about 20lbs lighter than the Honda 90hp, just curious if anyone has any experience with them? I've used smaller versions of Tohatsu for years and they've always preformed flawlessly. Thoughts?

A few years ago we visited Les at EQ Marine to look at C-Dory and Marinaut boats. He was now selling Tohatsu motors on his boats. He told us that Tohatsu was really a Honda, but rebranded so that it could be sold at a lower price point, but in his opinion was an equally good engine. That's all I know. I have a 90 HP Honda on Mistaya, which was purchased from EQ Marine when the boat was repowered.

The Tohatsu TLDI in your first link is not new, it has been around since the late 90s or early 2000s, it is designed and built by Tohatsu, Japan's oldest outboard manufacturer. Another member is in the process of replacing his twin TLDI 90s from 2006:

The 4 stroke Tohatsus from 60 hp on up are built by Honda, as stated in your second link. I had a Tohatsu-designed / built Tohatsu 50 4-stroke (the largest model before the Honda-built 60), also purchased from EQ marine in 2014, and it was a great motor.

If you are considering the TLDI 2-stroke also be sure to compare to the Evinrde E-Tec 90. Both models are now getting pretty dated compared to the current offerings of redesigned 4 strokes from Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Merc, but perhaps that's a testament to their robustness. I think Greg mentioned in another post that Evinrude will be coming out with a G2 E-Tec 90 in the future.

The 2 star and 3 star TLDI motors from Tohatsu are indeed not new and have been around in similar form but updated graphics since the late 90s like Mike said. They boosted the injection pressures a few years ago for better emissions but that is about it.

And Evinrude/BRP, the smaller +/- < 20hp are rebranded Tohatsus.
Can't swing a short-tailed dead cat with out hitting a Tohatsu......
We have a 3.5 and a 6 hp and both are very nice little motors at least in first 3 yrs of ownership.
