Well, we just took the plunge and bought a 2007 C-Dory 25! Formerly the "Dah Who" out of Wilmington, NC, the "Delfin" now hails from Emerald Isle, NC. We look forward to exploring from there on day trips and then on overnighters.
We're experienced inland boaters on outboards and inboard ski boats, but a C-Dory on the coast is a whole new ball game for us. Running to "Shack" to see the wild horses and hunt for shells, visiting Cape Lookout, searching for sharks teeth on the barrier islands, Beaufort for lunch or dinner, and cruising the ICW are all in our sights.
We already experienced adventure on our maiden voyage last weekend. One reason we picked the C-Dory is the shallow draft. People say "In Bogue Sound, 3 feet is good water." Well, that means you have to know exactly where you are going or you simply run aground. We had training in our area before, but when we got to where a "white drum" use to be, there was no white drum. There was a white PVC pipe sticking up nearby. We mistook the pipe for the drum and crossed the shoal at (evidently) the wrong spot. We nicked the prop on a shoal. No big damage, but on the first time out? Welcome to the Carolina coast! I guess we got that over with. Next time out, we trimmed the engine up more and got better directions!
On that same first trip, we were only out for a little over an hour and were pretty much surrounded by dolphins. They were jumping and splashing and having a great time. We took that as a good omen (well, besides the whole prop thing) and named our boat after Delfin, the greek name of the dolphin that helped Poseidon find his wife. (and it happens to mean "From Fin" in spanish)
We look forward to many adventures on Delfin, fixing her up as we go, and being a part of this great group of C-brats!
