New C-Dory 22 in Annapolis

Hello,

Next week my wife Penny and I take delivery on a new C-Dory 22 Cruiser. Her home port will be Annapolis, MD. No name yet. If I didn’t currently own a sail boat named Vamoose that is what I would name her. However, we are afraid to sell the sailboat until we are sure that we’ll like cruising in the CD22.

After a few fall cruises on the Chesapeake Bay, we plan to haul her to Marathon in the Florida Keys where we will spend the winter. Well at least the condo, in Marathon, will be home base for the winter. We sure hope to get out on the boat to visit many of the shallow places we could not reach when we cruised along the coast(s) under sail.

We would like to meet other C-Dory owners. So, if you cruise on the Bay or plan to come through the Florida Keys this winter send us an email. If we can’t join you, we can still haul you to the supermarket or West Marine. Heck, come to think of it, I know the name of every wave in the Bay. We’d be happy to introduce you.

As soon as we have a name for the boat, I’ll let you know so you can stay clear of a motorboat novice. And, if you see a 26 foot Born Free Motorhome towing a small green-striped boat, back off. I don’t have any experience doing that either. As for launching and retrieving, I’m not even sure it is “doable”.

Meanwhile, I’ll continue to read everything I can on this marvelous site. I’m counting on each and every one of you to make up for my lack of experience on small motorboats.

George, responded to your e-mail yesterday with a phone number. I'll be home all day tomorrow at that number. Will be down at our place on the river this weekend hauling Captain's Choice for the season for two reasons (1) Francis coming up the east coast and us located 90 miles away :thdown :thdown and (2) I'm having knee replacement surgery on the 17th :crook which will make any such activities out of the question for 6-8 weeks and by then our "season" will be over.

Be glad to talk with you, show you how Captain's Choice is rigged and have a libation or two :cocktail at your convenience.

Congratulations to you. Did you go through Cutter Marine? Levity is the name of my C-Dory 22 and we trailer to the Chesapeake and surrounding areas.
Just keep reading the posts here and you will learn much if not all you need to know.

Congrats on the new boat. As ex-sailors, and Nevadans, we will lay odds that you love it!
We are intending to be on the Gulf coast this winter, and love the Keys, so hopefully we can tie up with you in Marathon and do some cruising. Our last time down, we went up to Flamingo and into the Glades for some wonderful wildlife cruising.
Enjoy your new boat and hope to meet up with you this winter. Congrats again, on the new family member.

Great to have another 'right coast' CD in the near waters. Congratulations. I'm sure you will find a great deal of pleasure with your new 'portable' toy.

I, too, am expecting a new CD from Cutter to leave the factory this weekend. I'm glad to see you have yours in hand..

I pray that the upcoming storms still allow you the simple pleasures that you have work so hard to put together. Travel safe and don't forget to stop at intervals to check those wheel bearings and tires. Remember that they carry your new joy.

I bought my 22' at the last Annapolis show. I picked it up April 1st and brought it down the bay to Ocean Marine at Mile Marker 0. I kept my C&C sailboat, but it did not leave the slip all summer. I have put 72 hours on the C-Dory and I love it. I can't pull in anywhere with being asked about the boat, and that includes Ego Alley which was my first port of call. I sold my sailboat last month since it was not getting any use.

Congratulations, I am sure you will be pleased with your new boat.

I enjoyed our phone conversation last evening. If it works out, I would like to get together for that “libation or two” before we head South for the winter. Too bad we won’t see you on the Bay this fall. Good luck with the operations.

Yes, we are buying from Cutter Marine. Are you up for a cruise this fall? We know the Bay pretty well. Let us know of other places we should cruise in our area.

The C-Dory caught my interest several years ago when I read “River Horse”. When Penny and I decided to look for a small motor boat, we went to the company web site. One thing led to another and we ended up on your web site. Reading about your travels hooked us. We hope to do some of the same. So, we looked for a tow vehicle that we could live in, bought one in Marathon and took it North this summer. That was a lot of fun so we took step two and ordered the C-Dory from a phone booth in Hyder, Alaska.

We sure hope you will make a serious effort to let us know your plans so we can meet, when you are in the Keys. If we don’t get a good chance to pick your brains, you’ll not be able to discharge your responsibilities.

The six foot draft on “Vamoose” allowed us no further inland than the mouth of the Little Shark River when we visited the Everglades. One of our first trips will be to explore further up the river on the CD22.

It is encouraging, (I think,) to hear that you liked the CD22 well enough to sell your sail boat. After 38 years of racing and cruising under sail, it is HARD to cut the cord. On the other hand, there is definitely something wrong when one starts to “stress-out” over what toy to play with.

Welcome, George and Penny - we are just around the corner from Annapolis in Alexandria, VA. We have a 22-ft cruiser as well and she cruises all year round. We would love to get together with you before you leave for Florida.

The C-Dory is easy to haul and easy to launch and retrieve. After the first few hundred miles and the first 10 launches, you will be experts! We just returned from a 2,500 mile road trip to coastal Maine and Nova Scotia. The Otter was great in and out of the water throughout the trip. (We will post photos to this site as soon as our darn email connection at home starts working again.)

Better run, as we are heading out on the boat this evening. We are at home all weekend and will probably being doing some cruising. Please let us know if you want to come over fpr a cruise (703 660 9264) and/or practice! Otherwise, lets plan a get together on the Bay after you receive your boat.

Heh heh...I'm all for your style there, G&P. You can do whatever suits your fancy around here, we're not big into rules. However, your clever usage of arrows in a single post gets my nod.

It's great to have you guys on board with us. Grab a cold one, sit back, and peruse all the great info while you're waiting for your delivery next week. My guess is, this will seem like one of the longest weeks you've experienced in a while... :D
 
Welcome to C-Doryland. We bought "Snowdon" used in Florida just before the big blizzard of 2002 and towed her up through it. We are on the South River, just outside Aberdeen Creek on Persimmon Point, and look forward to meeting you--the splitting time in Florida idea has crossed our minds and we'd be interested in your experiences. As for the sailing dilemma--wouldn't know what to tell you. Been sailing for twenty years, and have an old Drascombe Lugger parked over in Harness Creek, while my trimaran sits in the weeds waiting for a touch-up. Both are small, and good for different types of sailing, so I haven't managed to gear up any thoughts of letting them go. Bruce and Jane Holly

We have sailed from Annapolis to Maine twice, spending about a month there each time. It will be interesting to hear where you put in, how many nights on board at a time, what you liked and didn’t like etc. Penny and I have discussed heading that way next summer, towing the CD, with Nova Scotia as the destination. Keep your notes dry, we’d like to hear and suggestions you have.

Thanks for the invite to come over. We’ve got a house full of kids and grandkids this weekend. Missing is our oldest daughter who is expecting her second any day now. I think she and her doctor plan to induce labor next week. While we eagerly await the delivery of the CD, it ranks well behind a new grandchild. There may still be time to plan a fall cruise while holding the new arrival.

Thanks for the kindly stamp of approval.

On the way home from Alaska we stopped in Kent. We took a good look at Da Nag and liked the way you have her set up. She was next to a hull that we thought might be ours; the timing was right and we had ordered one in that color. However, when we got home, we learned from the dealer that shipment had been delayed. We cancelled the factory order and bought one of the new ones on the dealers lot.

Your guess is right. Waiting is ungood.

We live in a community on Lake Ogleton. One of our favorite anchorages in late Oct. and early Nov. is Harness Cr. We hope to experience it this fall in the CD22.

As for splitting time between Annapolis and Marathon, we recommend it. This whole CD business started over our frustration with all of the shallow spots we couldn’t reach with our sailboat. This winter we hope to start visiting them in the CD.

Let’s plan a get-together before we leave.

We took delivery of a new C-Dory 22 Cruiser last Thursday and have named her Wanderer, in honor of her expectations.

The Head Nerd was kind enough to change our user name from “George and Penny” to Wanderer. This also changed all previous posts.

Tomorrow or Tuesday we haul Wanderer to her home port at the community dock here in Annapolis, where, with trepidation, I will make my first launch.

The next order of business will be to get her ready for our first overnight.

Hope you enjoy Wanderer as much as we enjoy Snowdon. Give us a hail--we're in the phone book. I also hope you weren't out on Saturday--it was the first time I've heard the NOAA forecast call for 5 foot waves on the upper Chesapeake--I was out around Thomas Point, and I can now say I think I know what driving over a cheese grater feels like--at least one that is also in a mixmaster at the time. Boat's fine, I'm still addled--par for the course. Enjoy. Bruce and Jane Holly
 
I'm a C-Dory owner from the San Diego area and it seems I'll be visiting Annapolis on business every couple months for the next year or so, maybe longer. I searched the C-Brat site for Annapolis and got a zillion hits. I'd like to make contact with an owner or two in the area and possibly pick up some local knowledge and/or go for a boat ride some day and/or fishing some time or whatever.

I'm also a sailor and next spring I want to look into renting a sailboat for a weekend somewhere in the Annapolis area.

No hurry. I'm just poking around for ideas.

Congratulations on the new 22. You are going to enjoy being in love all over again. From a fellow (ex sailor), the difference is worth it. And as to the pulling and backing and all. It comes with time. and you can find a ton of great tips right here on the sight, from the back of the trailer goes the way the bottom of the steering wheel goes when backing, to checking Wheel bearing temps, and a whole lot of everything in between.

Enjoy, travel safe, and if you are ever up on the left side again, come check out the desert on the coast town here. I have to say, I'm a bit envious, you heading south to Florida, and I'm going home from work tonight and going to be here again in the morning. But I will be thinking of all those brats converging on Florida, and praying for no more weather interuptions.

The original post was from 2004, George and Penny have traveled many miles since then! Even to our place in Maine! The thing that resurrected the thread was Jeff in San Diego looking for a ride when he comes out on business!

Jeff, when you come out, if you want to drive a couple of hours and come down to the Potomac, I'll take you out on a TC255.
