New Bilge Pump

Hello all -
Looking to replace my old bilge pump (Rule 1100) with new on my 19' Angler. Any recommendations on manufactures and model numbers that are good or pumps to stay away from. Was looking at possibly going with Johnson. Will be used in saltwater a lot.

Thanks everybody in advance.

My main comment is that (for myself anyway), I stay away from any of the "automatic" pumps. By that I mean that there are some that cycle on every X minutes (whether they need to or not) just "checking." That drives me nuts (noise) and also uses power.

I just installed an Attwood Tsunami T800 in our 19 plus a separate float switch but I have not used them just yet. I like the design with easily swappable motors so a compact spare can be carried and put in very easily without unmounting the pump from the boat. Ours is manual but I am wiring the separate float switch to trigger the pump as well when I leave in switched in auto mode. The canvas we will have on the back will basically eliminate water entry from the sky but you never know about the rest.

I just replaced the aft bilge in our 22 today. I replaced with what was there which was the Rule Mod 25S (500 GPM) Automatic. I installed it with a waterproof, three position switch which allows for automatic, off, and manual modes. It only uses .20 amp hours/day in automatic mode. We don't use the automatic mode unless unattended.

The West Marine catalog has a nice write-up and comparison of available pumps.

I just replaced my 2 year old defective port side
Rule-Mate 1100 with an exact replacement unit.

The defective unit was sent to Michael, Project Leader with Xylem in MA and he promptly sent back a new exact replacement unit.

The problem was that the unit's electronic water sensor became defective. The pump would work in only the manual mode. This became a very critical problem due to all the excessive rain and snow that has occurred at the New Bern marina, where Lady KC sits in the water. If it had not been for alert live-aboard's, we might have had a very major insurance claim.

I asked Michael for his input and direction for a more reliable unit, but his only suggestion was to replace it with the exact same product that came with the boat from C-Dory.

I have asked Michael to provide me with a report on what caused the unit to not operate automatically. It will be interesting if he ever gets back to me with this report.

Having two RM1100's become defective is of major concern to not only me but to all boat owners using a similar Rule-Mate product.

rule has a new pump coming out called a low pro series, thats sounding super versatile in the many positions it can be mounted ,as well as ways to activate it. I saw it on ship shape tv, but it's not out yet I'm told until some time later this year, Anybody else have info on this?
