Never Forget

9/11 was a loss, yes, but it is turning into a blatantly "manufactured" day of mourning for 2,752 lives lost. We've had worse days. Far worse days. Katrina cost 1,836 lives and it's already off the front page and it'll surely be page 4 next year.

Do Americans give equal press to mourn the 20,000 US military lost in Vietnam?

How about the 4,000 US military lost in the Iraq war SO FAR?

Does the Nation (read Media) get all whipped up over drunk driving fatalities like they do 911? Last year, we lost 16,000+ lives in the US to drunk driving. Almost 1800 were kids under 14.

Our National priorities are way wrong.

We need to get over 911 like we did Vietnam. There, I've said it.

With all respect to Don, there are differences between cumulative events like traffic fatalities and deaths in wars, between acts of nature like hurricanes and floods, between diseases such as cancer and heart disease; and huge single event attacks in our country. We've only had two of those-Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Both merit being remembered...always. I made my original post with that sentiment in mind. I put no extraneous words in that post precisely because I did not want to become embroiled in a politically charged debate, I simply want us to remember.

Never forget.

9/11 was the second time the United the United States was attacked on its own soil by an enemy who wants to eliminate us; this is the fact we should not forget.

Americans lost in our wars are remembered at specific times each year. This is as it should be - most of us are grateful for their sacrifice.

I agree that the 9/11 "manufactured" day has been blown out of proportion by the media -hopefully, that will settle down some.

Drunk driving fatalities are a sad thing best left to victims family's and the courts.

My opinion!

C-cakes, never forget, ever. Wish I could find Wilsons Churchill’s speech on not forgetting, it applies to 9/11 as well. This was an act like no other, not ever pearl compares. That was an attack on military targets. 9/11 had nothing to do with the military, it was a attack on a way of life and belief in freedom and that’s all I have to say.....

Tom: Well said
Barry: Agree
Don: Those too, need to be remembered

9/11 Trade towers, Act of Terrorism
12/7 Pearl harbor, Act of War
Deaths due to drunk driving: Act of stupidity
Lives lost in Iraq and Viet Nam Acts of Political aggression (US being where we don't belong, not doing what we should be doing)

Proud US vet, and glad for our freedoms, and remembering.

Grumpy thanks for the link.

"never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

Good words when they were first spoken, and just as good today.

I just got back from a wonderful day on the water and read both my post and the subsequent posts and have to admit I wrote my original post in an angry mood. this close to Camp Pendleton I see and hear about severely disabled marines being discharged all the time, simply to "make the funding problem disappear." OTOH, I had just read about the compensation received by NY firemen and 911 victims and the disparity in treatment iis appalling. The Marines are every bit as much heroes as the NY firemen. It's their job yes, but there seems to be zero "workers Compensation" for the marines.

Colobear you're right, and I do remember Pearl Harbor. Live. On the other hand, 911 was basically a flea bite in comparison to the tiger's mauling we got on December 7, 1941. It's been 7 years since 911 and though I won't forget the moment I saw the second plane crash live on TV, I don't like to see it pushed out of proportion either. Nonetheless, a good day with new friends on the Jenny B did wonders. If I offended a few Brats, I apologize. On the other hand, it needed to be said because I also believe 911 was blown out of proportion as justification for subsequent acts. I don't want this thread to degenerate into a political thread so that's all I'll say as well.

Don
