Need Help Please - C-80 and S1000 Not Communicating

[color=darkred]OK, C-Dancer Peter and I have spent pretty much all day installing the pump, course computer and the rest of the S1000. The easy part SHOULD be communication between the C-80 and the S1000, since they are both Raymarine, and you just plug the SeaTalk plug on the end of the cable from the C-80 into the bottom of the course computer, and that SHOULD be all that you need to do. But no she go, it says "No GPS fix" on the S1000 remote screen, even though we have a fix on the C-80. Anything we are missing? Any ideas? Thanks![/color]

It may be the communication port setting (300, 1200, etc baud)
 
My S1000 connects to a Furuno. I had the same issue when I installed mine, even sent it back to the factory for them to check. Of course they didn't find anything wrong.

What I did was connect my GPS output to a laptop to ensure I was in fact producing NMEA sentences. I had to make a serial cable with a RS232 connector, I believe.

Once I verified that I was receiving data, I only had to make sure I had the wires correct. I ended up cutting off the DB9 connector on the NMEA cable and pulled out the two wires I needed (don't remember the colors right now, but I think the manual shows them). Once I got that straight it worked fine.

Of course you're right; if it's all Raymarine it really should be plug-n-play. Hopefully what I did will give you some ideas to try.
 
I am not familiar with the specifics of these models, but most can set which communication port is being used--and this may be an issue. Go to the menue of both the chart plotter and auto pilot and be sure that Com Port is the same number. As noted above the baud rate is also important.
 
Not sure if this will help:

If you wish for the S1000 to be able to steer to a waypoint or route, other information is necessary as well including the bearing and range to waypoint, and cross-track-error. Once again, SeaTalk GPS and chartplotter devices automatically output this information. NMEA 0183 chartplotters need to output the sentences RMB and/or APB, BWC or BWR, XTE.<<

Also, looking at the C-series MFD...the following applies to troubleshooting the GPS receiver but may offer some help with the S1000.

>>If the GPS is connected in Seatalk mode, select “Seatalk…” from the menu and press the “Seatalk Devices” softkey. Check whether the RS125 is listed as one of the devices in the list. (**It appears you can choose NMEA or SeaTalk - you may want to explore whether you have it set to SeaTalk or NMEA).

If it is not then there is likely to be a connection problem between the GPS and the display. If there are no devices on the bus and there are other instruments on the Seatalk bus then the problem is likely to be the seatalk interface on the display<<

Pat, when I first had that problem, S1000 to the E-80, it turns out you have to be moving some to get the fix in there. Have you tried that?

I know you have to be moving for it to get heading information unless you have a gyro or a fluxgate compass connected and I seem to remember someting in the manual about there being some minimum speed for it to figure things out. Don't have either manual or boat in front of me.
Maybe the Raymarine website FAQ's would help.

I think it is about 3 kts. But you shouldn't be getting a no gps signal from the display, just no control.
