MPG vs MPD

There is a new bench mark out for vehicle fuel consumption. Instead of MPG (miles per gallon) it's MPD (miles per dollar).

Figuring the price of gasoline at $3.00 per gallon. :crook

Hmmmm.... :smilep

That means my big boat gets about 1/3 of a mile, or 586.6 yards per dollar......OUCH! We may not get any farther than the San Juan's this summer...Round trip there would be $223.00.......Sure makes my C-Dory look good.
:wink Jack

I know, I know, the wife and I kick it around from time to time. :disgust But, how else can you take your family some where for a couple of months for $3,000. :crook Once we get where we're going, we drop the hook and the big boat only runs once a week to go empty the potty. :teeth I'm all propane and the only things that use electricity are the lights and the toilet. Granted We do make a "Burger & Propane run every couple of weeks. :thup Now, if I had a big barn and shop to tinker in you'd have a tough time getting me out of there. :wink Jack

I think gasoline, and diesel for that matter, has almost become a commodity. Like water and milk, it cost what it cost and you can't do without it.

I think we ought to measure it in SPG. That's Smiles Per Gallon. I'm nearly almost smiling when I use the boat. Life's too short to count so many things.

Hear, Hear Charlie. Gas is going to have to go up abit more before I give up boating. Besides the 8hp kicker barely sips gas.

I am firmly in Charlie's camp! But going to go in the CD16 Crabby Lou wherever I can, and going to run the CD25 Daydream at economical speeds (6 - 7 knots) as much of the time as I can!

Hi Pat, :)
All you've got to do is run her fast enough to keep the plugs clean and the batteries up. :wink ..Let's see now...I wonder if the Honda would run a couple of synchronous motors? Hmmmm....Maybe a couple of hopped-up trolling motors :smileo

I have used gallons per time unit (hour) and consider this measurement my way for justifying how good this vessel is on fuel. Almost as good as smiles per hour.

If I go fishing for the day and it only took 6 gallons to stay out 6 hours I can determine my cost for time usage. To improve my time usage I just bottom fish longer and fish closer to port.

A very useful topic, and as fuel continues to increase in price (and it will, with Very minor backslides...) this promises to be an even larger issue even for C-Dory's.

On Naknek we get about 3.3 to 3.9mpg while on plane, so I figure the "on plane" cost at about $1/mile. if we slow to hull speed the mileage increases to an honest 6mpg (...therefore somewhat less then fifty cents per mile).

Shortly after buying Naknek I had Les install an autopilot. I find that with the autopilot it is Very easy, and quite enjoyable to just cruise along and take our time going somewhere - the ability to kick it up on plane to "get there" is always a nice option.

Personally, I expect fuel to increase about seventy-five cents per year until it's about $6/gallon. It'll be interesting to see what "recreational boating" is like at those prices! ...I suspect the waterways will be a lot less crowded (but a whole Lot of sailboats!).

PS ... I must add - it's very nice to be on a boat that you can spend a day/week/month or more aboard to enjoy extended cruising rather than just day boating. That time at anchor basically reduces the running costs (at least that's how I rationalize it in my mind)!

Funny you'all look at it that way.....I don't.... I really don't care what fuel costs.... if I want to go...I go...and pay what it takes... I consider what fuel I use on board just a part of boating...and that's what I want to do....I don't even keep track of the expense of the boat fuel.....

BUT, what I do look at...is what it costs to tow to a launch site... I think that as fuel becomes more expensive... long trips will become less .... or I will have to stay longer.... no more weekends at the Colorado River...if I were to stay a week or more then I could justify the fuel to get there...

But the boat fuel..... I just won't look... especially fuel prices at Lake Powell

I think you've about summed up the general feelings Joel. :thup As for fueling up at marinas. :sad ....I realize everyone has to make a living, but only when I have to. Whenever I can I buy Hi-way fuel & propane and top off the tanks in the winter. It's a lot of "Jerry Cans", but the difference in cost per gallon between the road and a marina puts almost $3.00 per can back in my pocket. :wink
