Motorola Droid Razr - Verizon

My old original Droid phone was at about the end of it's useful lifespan and was getting slow to respond to commands (I think the hardware was no longer fast enough for the OS after multiple OS updates). So, I ordered up a new Droid Razr. So far I've had 1 fill day to play with it but I must admit I really like it. The biggest deal with the new phone is that it's 4GLTE capable. I tested out the speed of the network with it tethered to my computer and I get about 15Mbs up and about 5Mbs down - e.g. similar to cable internet speeds.

I haven't done much testing with the GPS yet but it appears to be slightly less sensitive than on the previous phone as it took a little longer to get a good lock on my position especially with it in my chest pocket while running.

The screen is bigger, brighter and crisper than the previous phone and the camera is pretty good. So if you're considering upgrading an older droid, this one seems worthwhile.
 
I dropped my die hard droid one in the toilet . . .

Razr was coming out 2 days later.

Woot! I'm on vacation.

Phone is sweet for a droid/pc person.

The camera sucks. Hopefully the Dec update will address the focus/low light/flash issues.

Ah, Pat, that sounds kinda threatening. I do like Joan's iPhone, but the Droid Bionic is working well for me. Yeah, I know - a mixed marriage. The few times we've been in a 4G area, whew! Fast internet. Down here at the other edge of the US, we're excited to have a signal... may get indoor plumbing soon. :wink: On the other hand, it got into the mid-80s here today; I know that because it said so on my Droid. 8) :hot

Be sure to let us know how the plumbing on the Droid works. Been many times I could have used that feature! :shock:

Since it is blowing like stink and we have had rain, hail and even snow, I am assuming that it is that period of doom and gloom that we affectionately call Winter up here in PNW. That said, all it needs is for you to do a photo comparison shoot out between Droid and I-Phone on a nice sunny tropical typical day. Get some FDD's in there and we will have Pat wound up and in cabin fever mode nice and early this year :lol:

Hey, Merv. It might be tough to get f-d dolphin photos with either phone, since there is a painful delay with both. For something that doesn't move, either might be fine.

Here's a casual observation on the camera functions... the iPhone camera seems to be marginally better than the Bionic. Both have a painful delay, the iPhone is a bit less. The iPhone lens is a little wider view than the Bionic - not that that is better or worse, just an observed difference. On my original Droid, there was a separate shutter button on the side of the phone - more like a real camera. On both the iPhone4 and the Bionic, you have to push a little shutter icon on the screen to take the photo... cumbersome and the ergonomics make it harder to hold the camera still when you take a photo. The Bionic does send the photo to my computer faster via bluetooth than the iPhone.

Give me a real camera anytime, but if I don't have one on me, I'll use the phone camera. I understand the convenience of the phone cameras, since most of us carry a phone most of the time. Seems that most people use their phone as a portable photo album these days... "Want to see a picture of my _________?" (whips out the phone).

Since most people are willing to accept that as an alternative to showing/viewing an actual hard copy image, I'm glad to be out of the photography biz.

Having said all that, we did use our phone cameras yesterday while taking the fridge out of the boat so we could get at the helm seat...

Our Droids are coming up for change soon so I am quite interested in the differences. I think the camera is just an OK gimmick for the times when you do not have a real one with you, sort of instant gratification.

What would be really nice is to have something with better voice and communications quality but that would probably not be a critical item to the mass user :twisted:

I did notice that you had started the "baiting" process early this year :lol:

"Baiting"?? Me? Nahhhhhh! Hey, I mentioned to Pat in a PM that it has actually been too warm for comfortable overnighting on the boat currently. We're running about 10 to 12º above normal since we got back. Night time temps should be in the 60s right now, and they've been in the upper 70s... a bit too sticky for comfortable nights in the v-berth. Day time highs should be in the mid-70s, and they've been in the mid to upper 80s. That's supposed to change after today... it's 85º here right now, at 10:00 am. We were both sweatballs while working in the boat yesterday afternoon. 8)

Now, if you were referring to f-d dolphin photos...

Back to the phones: the iPhone4 and Droid Bionic are actually pretty similar in day to day use. For slick functionality, the iPhone is hard to beat. For speed and flexibility, the Bionic is my pick.

The Droid Razr camera is a significant improvement over the original Droid and sports 8Mpixels plus a 1.3M pixel front facing camera for video calls. I bought it instead of the iPhone4s since
1) I wanted to be able to easily tether using PDAnet and tethering with the iPhone 4s would cost me an extra $30/month and
2) The Razr is 4G LTE which get's me the super fast speeds (15MB/s up and 5MB/s down) when tethered.

The down side relative to the 4s is that it's not an international phone (e.g. no GSM) and it's not a slick/user friendly/rock solid as the iPhone. For me, the trade off is definitely worthwhile, for someone like my wife or mom, I'd rather get the iPhone.
 
the Razr low light, focus and flash performance is totally sucky . . .

hopefully this will be improved next update . . . . . . . .

I have it and mentioned it in another thread. Very polished, but the watch face displays take a bit of deciphering. I go to the text display if I need to know specifically what time the sun comes up or whatever. It's a fun app to have, and for $2 why not?

I'm sorry to double post it, must have missed the other thread.
I too found the watch display a tad chintzy and could not see it giving me much more than I can get for free by browsing the tide tables.

I have http://www.chronglobal.com/ on the i phone, it is OK, but does not give the graph as some other tide programs do. Maybe a bit more "flash", but less "splash". I would not get it again, but prefer Simple tides for $.99, which does give a graph. Neither gives the nearest point to my home, which is 2.5 miles closer and about an hour tide difference. The best on my i pad is "Tide Data"--both graph, and more tide stations.
