Motor Trouble-- Any Ideas/Advise?

Catch 22

New member
I have a 1997 Johnson 90hp 2 stroke, oil injected. I am looking for help or advise determining what is wrong with it.

Good signs:
Cooling cooling great, starting great, running great, spark plugs look new, cylinders look good inside (looked through the spark plug holes). No alarms have sounded.

Bad signs: There is water dripping out the two exaust ports on the back of the motor (not out the cooling line which spits water out a few feet and is seperate). Also there is thick brown/white oil or gearlube consistantly out the exaust ports, one more than the other. It is enough to leave balls of oil/gear lube floating all over my slip in the marina.

I know a little oil and water is normal but this is alot. I have heard, but I don't know if it is true, that if you have a bad seal in your lower unit it can send gear lube and water out your exaust.

Any ideas, eperience with this. How bad of a problem do I have? I'd like to get out fishing for the next month as the coho are running right out side the marina (shilshole) and I have already paid for moorage thru sept.

I have a 1987 johnson 2 stroke 90hp with automatic oiling which work great. I get water out of the two exhaust ports not a lot but some i don't think it is a probem. Is yours auto oiling or due you mix it 50 : 1?

If automatic may be the pump is pumping out the wrong amount, if mixed mybe to much oil does it run smooth? C-Otter

Miss read your post; yes mine has water coming out the two exhaust ports always has. Check your gear oil to see how full it is? Milky white means water or some gear oils are milky white. I don't think gear oil can iget into the engine or exhaust. Than what do i know. C-Otter
