Moorage in the PNW

I have decided that we need a home base in the Pacific North West for the summer. We will pick up our 27 Tug from the factory around the 18 or 19th of May. We plan to be in the area through mid September leaving after the Bremerton Rendezvous. We will probably be in the slip only about half of the time. We are considering Port Orchard, Everett and Cap Sante at this time. If anyone knows of a seasonal rental that may be available anywhere in the Pugent Sound-San Juan area, please let me know. Any pros or cons of local marinas will also be appreciated.

We have kept our 25 at Port Orchard for a year and a half now and love it. Lots of covered slips, clean restrooms/showers/laundry, fuel dock, free mobile pumpout and dock pumpout, dinghy racks, electronic entry doors, good secure parking, our base rate for covered 28ft is 176 per month.
 
I would second la Connor. clean, protected, cheaper then most, easy to the highway and in a really neat little town with good walking and dinning. I will have my boat there this summer and my folks keep their boat there year round. some will tell you that the channels to the south are shallow at low tide and they are but if you are not leaving everyday and time your returns on plus 1 or better tides you will not have a problem. I have heard that the south channel will be dredged but not when.

In looking for moorage, I'd suggest looking at marinas that are closest to the areas you'll want to cruise in. Most likely, the San Juans and Canadian Gulf Islands. Cap Sante or Skyline Marinas in Anacortes would be good choices. Bellingham is also a close gateway to the cruising area.

Nothing wrong with these other marinas but fuel is going up, up, up.
 
A freind of mine keeps a slip in friday harbor. This way he never has to worry about getting a spot. I dont remember the price but I was suprised how low it was at the time. no more then everett or cap sante I beleive. Its a six month deal.

I agree with Roger and Tom. Bellingham, Anacortes, or the islands. There may be other places closer to Seattle, maybe Everett or Edmonds, but stay closer to the area you want to cruise in. Get on line and call for rates.

For the San Juans and the gulf islands, I'd recommend Bellingham. It has great amenities and the town is a great place to visit. We're moored at Squalicum [Bellingham] and there are two Ranger tugs within 50 yards of us.
 
Anacortes marina had a few spots open but they are strictly an annual lease.
Cap Sante also had spots which are time limited as they are doing major renovations.
I don't know the situation at Skyline

Oak Harbor has slots on a monthly basis but it is about an hour from Deception pass or anywhere "outside".

Cornet Bay may have some slots.

Lopez Island has three marinas, two at Fisherman's Bay and one at Shoal Bay....Spencer's Landing Marina. I've also seen boats moored at MacKaye Harbor.

Call Richard Sands Realty at (360) 293-1255. They handle all the sales and leasing for Skyline Marina and I believe they can tell you who has slips for rent. Also call Skyline Marina at (360) 293-5134. They have a transient dock where I rented for several months before buying my slip. Finally, call my dockmaster Trudy at (360) 293-8801. She does not do rentals but she might know what is available, but only for my division of the marina.

Looks as if we are going to Anacortes (Cap Sante). It is the most expensive. We have to get a 40' slip because the dinghy puts us out past the 30' and they do not allow any overhang. We really enjoyed our time there last year in our motor home. Jake enjoys the walking path. The town is our kind of place. All things being equal, I guess we will rent a slip at Cap Sante from May 1st thru the end of September. More time on each end, but if we do not move now, we may miss out.
 
Herb - you may have your mind made up, OK, but there are a LOT of good reasons to consider dry storage, where your boat spends MOST of the time OUT of the water. We can highly recommend Hilton Harbor in Bellingham, right next to Squalicum Harbor. They can certainly handle your 27 Ranger, and can put it on blocks if you don't have a trailer. Unlimited slings in and out included in the monthly rate. We did this two summers while we were going out in the San Juans just about every weekend. We would do it again in a heartbeat if the circumstances were a bit different (boat now lives in driveway and we trailer to wherever we want to launch). For your consideration anyway.

Great Idea Pat, you know how I liked the concept at Twin Bridges, but they could not handle Tugs. Something about the hull design and their stands. Glad to know that Hilton Harbor has a similar setup. But this trip, I will not have the motorhome and we will be staying most nights on the boat. So it probably needs to be in the water.

I don't remember details but I think LaConner offers the dry storage/launch on demand service too. The rates were very reasonable.

If you like Anacortes, you will love LaConner. I had my boat at Cap Sante for a year. I much prefer LaConner.
