Minus Tides

Be alert ! :smileo

A week of MINUS TIDES is coming up an there have already been 3 sail boats stuck on the bar South of La Conner. I know most of the Brats draw very little water, but rocks are hard on props and I would hate to have to add one of you to my scrap book. :thup :smiled Jack

I was wondering about the minus tide as we head to the Anacortes gathering. If we go through at "0" tide will we be OK? We have never gone though LaConner and only have the Wagoner to guide us. Any local knowledge you can give us? If we can make it, would it be better to hit the slack tide and go through Deception Pass?

I just came back from Anacortes last Sat. Of course arrived at the ramp at low tide, the ramp was exposed above waterline and it was very difficult to get out. Had to winch the boat on the trailer. It worked but would plan it a little better next time. michael

I went from LaConner to Anacortes during a minus 1 foot tide with my Carver and it was nervewracking. We were skating on 4 foot depths at times. Didn't touch bottom but I lost a year of my life during the transit. Never again.

Trinity,

The Swinomish has a nasty trick up it's sleeve. :smilep Because it is a channel, La Conner is considered the terminus and the buoys are "RED RIGHT RETURNING" from either end. :sad Don't try to cut any of the buoys short at either end and watch out for the shallows on the West side, just North of the small marina at the South end. As for launching ramps most of them are un-usable on a normal low tide. Everything is on your charts. :thup Wave when you go by the tan house with the wrought iron fence, next to the flag pole . :smiled Jack

Thanks for all the tips.
Not sure yet if we will be going through in the am or afternoon on the 23rd. Will be sure to have all the charts out and print-outs of all the tips. Kerry has never gotten us into trouble yet, I am just an overly cautious planner ! ! !

Will be sure to wave as we pass by-
Really looking forward to meeting a lot of you in Anacortes. We Finally met Sarge as he motored past in his boat at the Port of Edmonds. Some day we will talk to him when we are both on land.............

Trinity,

One more thing, Stay well clear of any oil tankers anchored in Padila Bay.
I believe it's 500 yards. :sad You don't want to get the HomeLand Security Lads in a tizzy :wink

Hmmmm.. We've got the opposite (guess that figures, the water had to go somewhere) on the Right Coast! Unfortunately, my 8KW gas generator was on the end of the pier when the water was about 18" over the top of the pier and the electrical end got wet (salt water).

I've got it off the pier now, I haven't started it, what do folks think about washing it down with fresh water and letting it dry out good? Or is it a loss?

Charlie

Charlie,

I would wash it out. What have you got to lose!! Then change the oil and clean out the carb and fuel system. The standard treatment for a submerged outboard is to re-submerge it in fresh water until the mechanic can tear down the engine.
