OK, just randomly looking at albums, and came across Ron's modification to Meander:

Wider_v_bert_opening.sized.jpg

I don't trust myself to make nice straight cuts and rounded corners, but I really would like to do this. Ron, what tools did you use?

I also assume it would not be too hard to find the trim material?

That sure would make it easier to get in and out of the coffin, er, v-berth.

I like the shelves. How are they supported.

Pat,
I used a black and decker jig saw. Nothing special at all. I made a template out of card board before the cutting and smoothed the corners off with a drum sander attachment on a drill. Finding the trim is a bit of a challenge though. The thickness of the bulkhead is almost 3/4 of an inch for most of the cutout. The available trim is only up to 1/2 inch. I had always planned to trim the opening with wood so I didn't really worry about it too much. Haven't got the wood trim done yet though.

I really like the larger opening. It makes getting in and out much easier with much less disturbance to a bunk mate. Air circulation is much better, making for a warmer/dryer bunk, and it gives more room to stretch out when sleeping. I just wish the entire opening was at the same height as the factory cutout is.

Marvin,
The shelves are standard factory issue. They rest on one of the moulded lapstrake lips on the hull with probably bostik or a similar adhesive to hold it in place. The ends are supposed on one of c-dory's infamous L-brackets.
Simple but quite effective.

Cheers
Ron

Sure does look like a nice way to get in and out. And very nice looking, Like the shelves too. Thanks Pat for showing this off, and Thanks to Ron too, for doing such nice work and posting the pix.
