An 8.9 earthquake struck Japan about 2:30PM their time. TV footage shows a huge Tsunami wave engulfing towns and fields. Tsunami warnings out for much of the Pacific including Guam and Hawaii. Heights predicted from 13-30 feet.

Everyone,

If you know anyone in Hawaii or other Pacific Islands, call and warn them, they may not know about this.

Hello from Maui It is 11:30pm Thursday. 3/10/11
Ann & I flew into Maui this afternoon. We are here for our 30th aniversery with four other family members. We are staying at a beach front condo at Kihei. We heard about the tsunami on the news and started to pack. A local invited all of us to her house up in the hills. We are safe,we are about 120 feet above sea level. The gas stations are backed up and the stores are out of water. The roads are packed with people heading inland. Tsunami expected to hit at 3:00 am Hawaiian time. Local news predicting anywhere from 6ft. to 24ft. Warning sirens are going off every half hour. I will post an update tomarrow. Pray this is only a false alarm.

3:30am. 10 min. after the expected tsunami, live video shows only a slight increas in wave hight. Water is now receeding 10 to 15ft down the beach. If you can beleave it, there are a few people out walking on the beach at Waikiki.
Now water has receeding a few hundred yards back from the beach

Terry, thanks for the updates, we are leaving for Maui on Monday. Hope your safe.

Any updates would be helpful.

Stefan

4:20 am. Reports are saying a max wave hight of 3.3 ft. The " experts " are now saying the chances of damaging waves are slight. Authorities are not calling an ALL CLEAR until daybreak. The road back to our condo is still blocked. I think we dodged a bullet.

I just awoke and heard the news. As far as Hawai'i, the state has a very good early warning system. In fact, the Pacific Tsunami Center is located on O'ahu. The sirens went off as soon as they determined the possibility existed and all media (radio/TV) would then be on the civil defense system, w/ updates etc.

I know my dad's houses should be fine; they are not in the inundation zone. I'm gonna call later today to see how he/they are fairing. Waikiki should be a ghost town w/ the beaches empty and the tourist shuttled up to higher floors.

Our Prayers and best thoughts are with all who are in the zones. It looks like a lot of , even with low waves. Hopefully all on the US West Coast are OK. The TV images of Japan are very graphic at this time.

Thanks for the updates Terry. It sounds like the tsunami won't be as bad as first thought. It's great to hear from you, I was wondering where you've been. Hopefully you'll be able to resume your anniversary celebration without further interruption.

just reported that cresent city harbor was destroyed by waves. no pictures yet

Some live coverage on the Los Angeles times site of Santa Cruz harbor, with damage to some boats by the surge.

I saw that. Some expensive boats playing "Bumper Boats" w/ each other. Kinda pales in comparison to Japan though.
