Marines place $22.5M order for M1911

The 1911 drop safety was address years ago by Colt. They developed a rather complicated system for it that was not really necessary but did stop drop fires.

Most modern 1911 manufactures use a lightweight firing pin combined with a heavy firing pin spring. California requires every model sold in the state to pass a rigours drop test, as well as a number of other safety tests. All 1911s sold in the state now pass this test. Not that I love California's endless regulations, but I think accidental drop firings of modern quality firearms is generally a thing of the past.

Both the Beretta and 1911 are large frame semi-autos. Neither fit small hands real well. Reaches are long on the 1911 while the handle is relatively thin being a single stack. There are things, like thin grips and shorter triggers, that can make the 1911 easier to use for smaller hands. I do not know much about the Beretta.

There are a lot of factors that go into a handgun being comfortable to the operator. Some just feel right and some just feel wrong. I have heard a lot of our troops have bought their own handguns for the sandbox wars. For most GIs this would be a large investment but given it is your life, perhaps a worthwhile one.

Love the 45 but as more of our military are females with much smaller hands the 9 is more comfortable for them to use.

I just want to clarify something here. the m9 is a LARGER weapon that shoots a smaller round. It fits my hand better because I got big hands that over lay the 1911. Please do not get the physical size of the gun mixed up with the size of the round. the 1911 has a singe stack mag there fore a smaller narrower frame. the m9 has a 15 round double stacked, well really off center from the round above not sided be side, so its a much wider frame and the gun as a whole weights more.

if anyone has one of each please feel free to post a pic of them laying side by side and you will see what I mean.

I will never knock the .45 ROUND but I prefer something better , and safer then a colt 1911 to throw it. Just one opinion for a Marine.

Hope this helps!

Yes it does. funny thing is that the m9 is larger but lighter when empty due to the design and parts, but the weight of the extra round make it a heaveir weapon when loaded.

every one has thier favorite gun and I always shoot the one that I like best. I just dont think the m9 gets the respect it deserves in the U.S. If I owed one I would get it chambered for .40 for the punch.

As for the newer .45s having been updated, about fing time. I know everyone loves them and they are a great gun if in good shape or custom built like our target guns were, but I just had to many old ones that I had to teach with and after getting "accidental" shot at a few times I get skidish. got tired of patching holes in the roof of the target range everytime one went auto and a shooter could not stop it from climbing or just dropped it.

alot of the troop in the sand are bringing glocks. which is a nice gun to but I have not shoot it a lot.

a friend once asked me if I thougth it was safe to post online that I own firearms? I told him it was safer then him posting that he does not
