Marina gas prices

I have not seen one but I don't buy gas at marina's. Also, usually there is only one marina at the location I'm heading so there's no real choice. Not to mention it's pretty much a given that they want your first born. :lol:

Seems if you do not trailer your boat, i.e. it is in dry storage or moored, then you have to rely on the marina for gas, right ?
So how much higher are the prices at the Marina ?

To sell fuel at a marina is really expensive for the operator... not only does he have to make his expenses but he also needs to pay for the overpriced insurance (against a horrific fuel leak) plus he is a concessioner and must cut in the harbor for a huge bite..
So when they want $4. for gas I just pay....they make a profit, just not the huge profit ..... the state takes most of that.

Don't forget that for those of you in Washington State, you can get a rebate on your "road tax" paid with your fuel. (Whether you purchase your boat fuel at a marina or at a gas station on land). Therefore keep your boat fuel receipts and comply with the regs the state has on this. After getting in the system they issue a fuel tax number so that participating marinas will not charge the "road tax" up front!
Some other states offer the same rebate.

Yea, upon my arrival back from the boat show I had a check waiting for me from the State of Wa for my tax refund. Once you register and have sent in the first it only takes a couple of minutes to copy the form out and put it in the mail with your current receipts.
Wish I could have sent in the receipts for the Ketchikan trip!

This all comes under fuel management.
1. I avoid at all costs buying fuel at a marina. I always fill up in a gas station using only regular gas before launching.
2. I carry (now) two 3 gal jugs for gas. They are about the largest ones to use that is still comfortable for me. I also fill these up when I top off my tanks at the gas station.
3. When boating, I try to buy the gas at a station located close to a dock. I might take a few trips, but it works. I try to leave with all tanks full as well as the two 3 gallon tanks, unless I am going to trailer the boat. Then I like to end my cruise with empty boat tanks and a few gallons in my spare tanks. I put the spare fuel in my tow vehicle tank for the trip home.
4. I always put an additive in my boat tanks and the spare tanks after I have filled them off. This should keep the problems away.
5. This does not always work, but it works most of the time.
This is one guys approach to the gas problem.

Most slip contracts, even short ones, include a statement avowing you will purchase fuel only from the marina fuel dock.
While I don't like the idea of "price gouging" , I do have to agree with some earlier statements here that running a marina and providing services, insurance, etc., at the actual lake site, is an expensive proposition. With all the private marinas being sold for condos, I think we ought to just buck up and support our support groups.
Just think of how difficult it is to be there, ready for customers, during all the slow times!
