The following is taken from an article that appeared in today's Everett Herald.

"A 50 year old Seattle man is accused of sinking his own motor yacht". Court documents say the man "was piloting the vessel from Bainbridge Island to Seattle when he scuttled the yacht halfway through the trip. Insurance investigators examining the boat found that a 2-inch hole had been cut into the boat's hull and that the bilge system had been damaged". The man "admitted to federal agents and Seattle detectives to sinking the boat because the financial pressure and frustation of maintaining the boat caused him extreme anxiety". "Prior to the sinking", the man "had attempted to sell the boat at an asking price of $28,500".

Here's a link to a Seattle PI article on the story. This link in practical boat owner magazine provides a little more information

"Confronted by investigators, Lewis admitted that he had experienced engine trouble, which caused him to lose his temper. In his rage, he smashed the sea strainers with a hammer and drilled the hole to sink the vessel.

Investigators submitted: '[He] wanted to clarify that his motive for sinking the vessel was anger and frustration, not greed.' "

Perhaps those with short tempers shouldn't carry a drill on board.

IF I'VE TOLD BYRDMAN ONCE, I'VE TOLD HIM A HUNDRED TIMES, CALM DOWN, DRILL IN ONE HAND AND HAMMER IN THE OTHER, LOOKING LIKE A MAN POSSESSED, IT'S NOT WORTH IT, DON'T SINK THE BOAT, AT LEAST NOT THIS WAY, NOT THIS TIME.
WELL, HOPEFULLY THIS WAS NOT HIM!
BYRDMAN, IF YOU'RE OUT THERE GIVE ME A SHOUT.
YOUR MOST HUMBLE FRIEND.

Financial pressure and frustration? NOW, he gets to add legal fees, potential jail time, EPA violations, a criminal record, AND no boat to his frustrations. :crook

What happened to doing things the honest way? :?

The incident was on the CNN opening page a few days ago. I forgot to add humiliation to the list of frustrations.

"According to court documents, Lewis ultimately admitted to sinking the boat because the "financial pressure and frustration" of maintaining the boat "caused him extreme anxiety."'

We have had discussions all last year and earlier this year on the subject of the economy and boating. Here's one result of "financial pressure and frustration" none of us had considered (or at least, no one wrote about it). Hmmm, come to think about it, anyone see Halcyon lately?

"financial pressure and frustration of maintaining the boat "

A C-Dory doesn't come with these accessories. :wink

If I tried to sink the boat my wife would kill me. We have a plan in place in case the worse happens and susan loses her job and it does not include selling the boat. In fact the house goes first.

I thought about that, but how would I get the lathe into the boat? :crook

For over twenty years we had no house (still don't own one). Either a slide-in pop-up camper was home or a boat. So, we don't have to think about selling a house -- and we could easily move back aboard Halcyon full time again.

So we will guarantee you that we'd never sink our little gem.
