First off, if the boys run the tank dry, make them fill it up!! They're still young enough to drink that gas.
You do have to slow way down on the fill when the tank gets close to the top. It will "burp" all of a sudden, and that's probably what happened. I always take a towel, wrap it around the nozzle, and hold it against the fill hole to catch the splash that I know is coming. I use another towel beneath the vent to catch the fuel spewing out of there. After the "burp", it will take another 5 - 10 gallons, but I usually don't bother topping it off.
If you are having trouble getting it to take fuel no matter the tank level, you might want to talk with your dealer and see if you need the fix that C-Dory has done for a few other new 25s.
