Malibu Rapids Flood-is it safe?

Malibu itself is a pretty short stretch but remote location, overfalls and other traffic add danger.
Marine biologists tell me that at Malibu and Skookumchuck male killer whales keep their pod out of the passes until near slack. Good enough for me to wait around and go at slack
BC current passes are really best tackled within an hour either side of the slack tops. The overfalls and reverses of current banging off the sides will make for a wild ride. Take care, George
 
By my rough calculation, Malibu Rapids is about a 1/4 nautical mile long.
It would seem that a boat would traverse this distance in a short time, even at hull speed, and should not unduly delay anyone waiting to enter.
Am I correct on this?

Caryn and I have been thinking about going somewhere "different" this summer rather than the usual haunts. This discussion has put Princess Louisa Inlet back on the top of out TDL. Thanks for the inspiration!
 
We are going to Princess Louisa, probably first or second week of september. Haven't been there in about 15 years. I will try to hit the slack but not going to back off if I miss it. It's a little jiggy at full ebb but doable in boats like ours. Personally, I would rather run that quarter mile in the slop than that couple of miles approaching Nanaimo from the south.
 
Haven't been through the Malibu rapids, but from past experience on other rivers(especially upper Yukon) and many other tidal rapids I wouldn't hesitate to go through the Malibu rapids at 5.5 knots in the Hunkydory.

Now there are several others we've been through at ebb and flood that won't be repeated such as Fords Terror shown here in the same ebb tide conditions we passed through it. Even going with the ebb steerage wasn't really a problem, but the open middle front window sure was. :lol:

Well done video!!! Having been there enjoyed it all that much more. Sure appreciate you posting it Tom. We plan on being back there for another go around in about a month.

Roger, as you have guessed, my maritime experience is rather limited. That's why I check this web site daily to experience it thru fellow C-Brat's exploits.
