Magma BBQ Grills

I received a Q grill as a present a few years ago (yes, the one from the infomercials) and it works pretty well. The best feature is that when it is in the case, it fits perfectly into the latched storage bin at the helm seat. I still have my Magma in the garage until I find a better storage solution.

Greg, what keeps the rail mount bar from falling out of and from rotating in the Scotty pivot hinge hole? I see a thumbscrew in your photo but not how it is used.

I pushed/drilled one fastener out of the magma rail clamp at the end of the rod and that left the hole where the thumbscrew is now. The threaded shaft of the magma mount was just the right dimension to fit through the scotty pin whole and stick far enough out the other side to allow use of the original magma hand fastner on the end. I slipped the rod through the hole and spun it onto the fastener then used the other hole as a guide to drill a small hole in the plastic of the scotty mount for the thumb screw to keep the whole thing from rotating. I reused the nylon washer on the thumbscrew side just for kicks. Both are just hand tight and while the shaft snugged into the pin hole well enough not to rotate while stationary, I figured lots of bouncing and vibration would eventually try to spin the whole grill so thats why I put in the thumbscrew. The push button rotation/lock feature on the scotty allows us to keep it in the cockpit while cruising and quickly spin it out for use. No more mounting and un-mounting the rail mount hoping not to drop the whole thing in the drink. The mount can be freed up for fishing in about 15 seconds.

A little tip on refilling 1 lb cyl. put the empty cyl. in the freezer for an hour or so before filling. Works way better. mbw

Be careful of overfilling. They normally fill propane cylinders to only 90% to allow for expansion. Do the little cylinders have relief valves on them? I think they do. Don't store them inside the boat!

I'm also trying to figure out which "Q'er" to buy. One thing I've heard about Bar-b-ques is that some of them rattle while under way. Seems like the Magma or the Dickinson are the ones most often talked about in this thread, can anyone comment on the rattle factor of their particular model?

I have the small kettle magma model A10-205 and it does get nice and hot for steaks and does not rattle under way. They do gather surface corrosion much faster than I would have guessed so keep the salt off it and store it somewhere dry. Mine is only 7 months old and you can see in my picture how it already needs a cleaning/polish after that many months on the boat.
