Mac Users Forum

Chris and Roger- Here's what I'm using so that anyone reading these posts will know what the directions I follow match up with:

Operating System:

Mac OSX
Version 10.4.4

Browser:

Safari
Version 2.0.3
417.8

I just logged on with Janet's laptop. OS X 10.4.3 Safari 2.0.2
Sure enough, copy image address is an option! I'll post more pictures later. It is lights out time for me. Thanks again for all of the breakdown help!

OK Chris - I just tested with that Safari 1.3.2 - had to use my son's computer since I have OSX 10.4 and it has Safari 2.0.3.

Anyway, Safari 1.3.2 is a bit strange in that way it handles ctrl clicking on images - I think it was Apples's attempt to avoid making it to easy for people to "steal" images.... 2.0.3 is better but it's not available for OSX10.3 so two solutions:

1) With your current version of Safari, ctrl-click and pick "open image in new window" - copy THAT link from the browser's navigation toolbar - that will work

OR

2) Download and install Firefox. It's (IMHO) a better browser than Safari or IE. The original instructions I gave will work with that.

Sorry for misleading you since your browser doesn't have the same features as most...

On edit - I see you beat me to the understanding the Safari 1.3.2 <.ne.> Safari 2.0.3...

Mike - that is a riot. Couldn't quit laughing. Terri had to come in here to see what I was laughing at. While it was funny to her, it did not have the same impact on her, unless she would read this thread first. I am still laughing so hard I am having a hard time typing.

Alvig's post regarding the use of a Mac laptop for navigation reminded me of this forum.

I can't get the spellcheck to work with my Mac GS-5 running OS-X and Safari. I know I have to turn off the pop-up windows block, but the spellcheck window appears, and then just stays black. Any ideas?

Thanx, Joe.

Fiddling around, I have found that if I switch over to Firefox for a browser, everything works fine on the SpellCheck. Wonder what's wrong with the compatibility with the Safari browser? Joe.

Joe,

I don't use safari much as I switched to Firefox awhile ago. However I did do a little testing and web surfing on this issue. I suspect that the problem is Safari is preventing the pop-up from calling/running code (a javascript) that is obtained from a 3rd party site. If you view source in the pop-up, you'll find that the backgroun is set to black and then some code is called. There's a reference to an external site (http://www.master-technology.com/demos/spell) that I beleive may be getting blocked.

BUT you don't need PhP spell if you are using Safari which (as I discovered this AM) makes use of the built-in spell checker that is integrated into the OS for use by mail and other programs. Here's what you do.
1) In any window in which you are typing (while in Safari), start typing.
2) After you have typed a character, if you check under the "edit" menu you will notice that the menu-item "Spelling" is no longer greyed out. Select the first sub-menu item - e.g. Edit->Spelling->Spelling...
3) The spell checker will go through the text you typed from start to finish as one would expect.
4) Note: the other two submenu items of Edit->Spelling->Check Spelling and Edit->Spelling->Check Spelling While You Type were not so useful. The "check spelling" one only checks what's highlighted, while the check while you type option did not appear to work at all (or not as I expected at least).

My company's website doesn't work with Safari due to a problem with the way it works with Java. We do however detect that up front and let the user know. So I would suggest getting Firefox for those sites that Safari doesn't work on ;)

I've heard that the designers of Safari are working on a solution though. Should be interesting to see how long it takes them to solve it.

Do any of you out there familiar with the Mac computer operation and various browsers know how I can in mass take all of my "Favorites" (Bookmarks) from their listing under Safari and put them into a FireFox browser? Much too time consuming to do them one by one!

Thanks in advance!

After having read Pat Anderson's funny and also very informative blog and account of his history with computers and Imac's, etc., I thought it might be appropriate to ask those more knowledgeable than I here on this site about the care and feeding of the Imac.

What procedures and programs and so for might be best pursue to keep your Imac running swiftly, especially since this site is so hard to keep up with? What do you do to avoid the slows and other computer problems?

Thanks!

Joe,

In general, there is no care and feeding of the mac (other than installing the upgrades which will auto install if you stay connected to the net and let them autoinstall).

HOWEVER, I recently purchased a new, large screen (24") i-mac and did experience problems with the thing slowing down over time. I traced it to a problem with the screen saver. Once I turned the screen saver off (and simply used the feature that blacks the screen out instead), the problem went away.

Are you having a problem or just wondering in general?

People are incredulous when I tell them we need absolutely no "anti" programs (anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.), no "registry repair" or "cleaner," and only a few periodic security updates on either the Macs or the Ubuntu PCs, and that they boot fast and will run almost forever without resets. It is ALL Microsoft's fault for the crappy code in Windows that allows memory leaks and buffer overflow exploits. And they foist it off on Windows users for not being "responsible." Honestly folks, it is time to say "I'm mad as hell and not going to take it any longer" and jettison Windows entirely. If you are not ready to buy a new Mac, at least do yourself a favor and replace Windows with Ubuntu. The new Ubuntu 9.04 is just out and ready for free download. It is a bit more of an adventure sometimes than using a Mac is, but it truly is ready for prime time. Hey, this seems like deja vu all over again! I will be doing a blog article on Ubuntu pretty soon...

Thanks, Roger and Pat!

I'm not having a specific problem, just experiencing the slows sometimes.

I have to re-start the computer more and more often to clear it up, it seems.

I was wondering if all the photos, bookmarks, folders, and other saved information and data need to be more frequently cleaned out/sorted through/partially eliminated.

I wasn't aware that the IMac's don't require any anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc., although I knew they were mostly free of the pathogenic stuff aimed at the PC and Windows users.

I do all the updates as soon as they are available, even for some programs I'm not curently using.

I have had a problem not being able to open Windows /Word documents because I refuse to pay them the tariff for their system I prefer not to use, and have found I can't read some PDF files, even though I've downloaded the latest Adobe Reader that is supposedly required according to the document's instructions.

Thanks for the encouragement and support!

Joe. :teeth :thup
