Well, the new boat came with a Lowrance Elite-5 gps/fishfinder combo. My question is this (please don't laugh) How do you turn it on?
There is no "power" or "on/off" button (that I can find)

BTW that's a good machine . I use them on the rental boats . Has what you need and works well . Can add Navionics Gold charts . Its simple and just seems to work .

I got to use one on a 22 while fishing this summer in the SJ's. its a great fish finder with good seperation. I was able to easily locate small schools of bait fish with feeding fish under them.

OK, now that I have learned how to turn it on, here's a new question- Can I get an up-to-date mapcard that will show more detail than the basic I now have. If yes, which card is recommended?. Not interested in fishing spots, just depth bars and more detail. Thanks.

I bought the Elite 5M Gold (the M means it's a plotter only), which came with the Navionics Gold US and Canada card. I like it a lot, but I'm guessing it's not as good of a deal on its own.

The Elite 5 only uses Navionics Micro SD charts in the "Gold" series, so some of the higher resolution (Platinum and Platinum plus) charts are not available.

But I believe that the "Fish n'chip" charts are available in micro SD, and if this is the case, then you can get theses which have better Bathymetric material, which will show better bottom details.

Also Navionics may have updates of the chart chip--or you may find a micro SD specifically for your region--and that may have more detail than the general map for the entire US.

I would give Navionics a call, and find out exactly what is available for your area in the micro SD format.
